Survivor 50's [Spoiler] Breaks Down 'Uncomfortable' Rivalry That Led To Her Downfall

Spoilers ahead for Episode 6 of "Survivor 50!

Sometimes, not even a Shot in the Dark can protect you from an unseen "Survivor" twist.

In Wednesday's "Survivor," a cursed Blood Moon hit the beaches of Fiji, claiming three (!) victims after the merge's first immunity challenge. Unfortunately for Genevieve, she found herself alongside Devens, Christian, Aubry, and Joe, and understandably, the cards were just not on her side. With Christian immune and no allies to protect her, Genevieve took her Shot in the Dark, and missed. After being declared Not Safe, the season's top idol hunter was voted out of the game 4-0, thereby putting an end to her second "Survivor" rivalry, this time with Aubry. (Read our full recap here.)

So what went wrong between Genevieve and Aubry, why'd she fork over her coat, and what did she really think of Billie Eilish's boomerang idol? Keep reading to learn all this and more! (Check back soon here or on our YouTube page for full video of the interview!)

TVLINE | I so wanted you and Aubry to become a dangerous duo, but it felt like you were two wary lionesses circling each other. So from those early days on Vatu, why couldn't you two get on the same page?
GENEVIEVE MUSHALUK | That is such a good question, Nick, and I would have loved that too. I would have loved, you know, the lionesses in a pack, going for their prey instead of at each other. But I think sometimes you just get an oil and water situation and you can either utilize that to your advantage to confuse other people or you can utilize it to let other people know you're not their target because that's your target. And so, because we didn't have the right chemistry to work together, I had to kind of go with the latter, but yeah, I was an Aubry fan going into Season 50 and that would have been great. You and me both, buddy! [Laughs]

TVLINE | Was there anything that we didn't see in some of those early conversations between you and Aubry? Any more context you can give us?
Yeah, so prior to that conversation, I had had a few of the people in my alliance, which, by the way, an alliance?! Wow. They're pretty fun to work with! I didn't get that on Season 47! [Laughs]

TVLINE | What growth! [claps]
Thank you, thank you! [Laughs] This actually worked out worse though than last time. Something to be said for being a lone ranger, but a couple of people I was working with let me know early on that Aubry was floating my name around and planting seeds. And so by the time you see that conversation, this has all come back to me, but I think she doesn't know it's come back to me. I would have been more wary of going into that conversation, but I would say the bits that you guys saw are probably the most positive parts of it. It was really, really uncomfortable. From then on, there were a couple points where I think we tried to just say like, "Alright, here's what's happening. How do we correct the ship?" but just couldn't get there. It's tough because if I was her and I've got friends out here, why would I waste my time playing with someone who I don't like? I totally get her perspective. But yeah. Bad. Not fun.

On the 'nuanced gameplay' we didn't see on TV

TVLINE | You still gave her your beautiful red coat on the way out!
It was beautiful, Nick!

TVLINE | It was! I saw it in person. So why hand it over?
It was wool. Yeah, so Angelina had left her coat, and that makes a difference. At night, it is so cold, and I know you can look up the weather in Fiji and you're like, "That's not cold," but when you're starving, it's cold. I thought it was just so brilliant of Angelina to leave it, and she's so pragmatic, and I'm, likewise, very pragmatic, and I wasn't gonna need that wool coat at Ponderosa, sadly. As you know, it's a comfortable resort. I would rather need my coat than be comfortable sipping margaritas by a pool, but still, that was my fate. So yeah, it was kind of a no-brainer just to leave it to other people who would need it.

TVLINE | Did Aubry return the coat? Do we know its whereabouts?
I do not have the coat. I don't know what happened to the coat. Hopefully someone does, or, you know, maybe someone found it in Fiji? Someone find the coat, find the coat people! Where in the world is the coat? [Laughs]

TVLINE | Speaking of Angelina, she spoke out last week about this season not representing the women enough. Do you have any thoughts on that?
Yeah, and I think there's a lot there. Look at the stats. You can see and decide for yourself. But what I would say, my experience on this season is there was a ton of gameplay happening and there was a lot of very nuanced gameplay happening. And so on our swap tribe, for example, I don't think you got to see much of the dynamic there, Chrissy or what she was doing or working on or any strategic conversations, but there was lots happening. I think as a fan of "Survivor," what I like to see is the gameplay, and I really like nuanced gameplay, and I think it lends itself well to how a lot of women approach the game. But I think we're getting a lot more slapstick content instead of the nuanced strategy. And it's not to say it's not happening. It is happening. There are so many great conversations like that out there, and I wish they could all be shown. And yeah, Angelina? You've talked to her. She's a force. You didn't get to see that, but she's a force, so you miss out on great stuff like that.

TVLINE | You found two idols! How frustrating was it that you had to then give them away?
What I knew going into this season, if I'm lucky enough to find a beware advantage, whatever it is, take it because the odds of everybody being successful in the game and based on the relationships going into the game, I needed a lot of help. So a beware advantage would have been a calculated risk [that] 10 out of 10 times I'm taking. I did not foresee a boomerang idol, and my challenge with the boomerang idol is that I think there are already advantages in the game in terms of how many friends do you have going into the season. How many relationships do you have? And the boomerang idol is a game mechanic that is going to further exaggerate that imbalance and those advantages, because if your friend finds a boomerang idol, they're gonna give it to you. There is no one out there that I feel like would have given me a boomerang. So, this is an advantage that really only ever is going to cut against me because no one's going to give it to me and if I find it, I have to give it away. So it sort of disproportionately benefits other people over someone like me who's a little less connected. But I think it's an interesting game mechanic and concept. I just wish they introduced it in Season 51, you know?

TVLINE | Meanwhile, the two guys you gifted an idol to are straight up chillin' on Exile Island, not a care in the world!
Must be nice!

TVLINE | If your rock draw for the immunity challenge went differently, do you think you could have survived the vote in one of the other two groups?
We'll never know, but let's go with yes, Nick. Yes, I would have, I could have. [Laughs] I do think, it depends which person you swap me with from that group, I think, but on balance, I would say yes.

'Why do I always have to have a rival?'

TVLINE | What season was harder to play, "47" or "50"?
That is such a good question, Nick. OK, I would say "47" was more difficult because everything is extreme on "Survivor," and I didn't know how to cope with it. So, I learned a lot about myself in that season. But Season 50 was hard insofar as I thought I knew "Survivor" and returning player-"Survivor" is very different than first-time player "Survivor." So, they're both really hard. I don't know.

TVLINE | If you had made it there, which two players would you have wanted to sit next to in the Final 3?
Knowing what I knew at the time I got voted out, I would have... so let me tell you what's going on in my head. What I'm thinking is, who do I really want to see at the end, or who do I want to sit by because I think that'll give me the best chance of winning? I have both trains trying to leave the station at the same time, and they're just crashing on the tracks.

TVLINE | Let's go with the latter. Who would you choose to set you up for the big win.
At that point, I think because I had an information advantage over Rizo, kind of like how Dee had over Austin, I think I would want to sit by Rizo because of the idol that I had given him that at this point, he doesn't know about. Then, probably Joe because he's trustworthy. He and I were working together. People are like, "Oh, honor and integrity, it's so boring!" Let me tell you, when you are playing with someone who is honor and integrity, and they have your back? It is such a breath of fresh air in "Survivor." So I would want to hold on to that comfort as long as possible. Joe is just a really good guy and so that's who I would go with.

I would be worried to sit with Colby because he is such an incredible speaker, but he and I were really, really close in the game. People didn't get to see that. Also, Nick, it is difficult to be in an alliance with someone, as Colby will tell you, he does not have good eyesight and he's kind of deaf in one of his ears. So when you try and whisper to your alliance-mate discreetly, and there would be times I'd whisper to him and he'd just give me a look back and I was like, "Oh, right, wrong ear," then I'd go around and re-whisper in the other ear. He's just so great. It was kind of like this unlikely duo, but yeah, we had a blast. He's a really good guy.

TVLINE | Was there anything about your game or anything about Season 50 that wasn't shown that you want to share?
God, there was lots that wasn't shown that would have showed you guys how horrible at "Survivor" I am, but I just wish people got to see a little more of the strategic conversations, again, that some of the other women were having that were more nuanced. I know it was a big story arc, aside from the idols, was a rivalry piece for me, but there was just so much more than that. And I think some of the interesting discussions about the risk decisions around throwing challenges, how we tried to throw challenges and missed, what we would have done had we successfully thrown, sort of all of those just get buried, but those moments and those conversations help you understand the hierarchies and what's happening, and as power gets reclaimed, it makes it more satisfying to watch. So yeah, there's so much there. Twenty-four people is a lot. We need way more than 90 minutes.

TVLINE | Well, when you're out there for your third time, it'll be fun to see who your next rival is!
No, why do I always have to have a rival? [Laughs] I just want friends. I just want to be liked like everybody else!

TVLINE | You're liked by the fans!
I love the fans. I am one of the fans. Those are my people. I can't wait to be a fan again.
