Why Iain Armitage Hasn't Reprised Young Sheldon On Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage

Iain Armitage could have returned to Medford for a Cooper family Thanksgiving. Instead, the "Young Sheldon" star opted to keep Sheldon in Pasadena a little longer.

In the Jessica Radloff-penned oral history "Young Sheldon: The (Juicier-Than-Meemaw's-Brisket) Inside Story of the Hit Comedy," Armitage's mother, Lee, reveals that the actor was invited to reprise his role early in Season 1 of "Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage," but ultimately passed to prioritize other opportunities.

"They wanted Iain to be on the Thanksgiving episode... and they were kind and generous about it," Lee Armitage says in the book. "The more I think of it . . . we maybe could have gotten to a 'yes,' but he and his agent thought it was important to do other roles first. Maybe there would be some time in the future where it could happen, and that would be wonderful."

As TVLine was first to report, that Season 1 outing would bring back Zoe Perry's Mary, Raegan Revord's Missy, Annie Potts' Meemaw — all for their second appearances — and Craig T. Nelson's Dale for the family's first Thanksgiving following George Sr.'s death. Sheldon, who had moved to California to attend Caltech, remained absent.

Series co-creator Chuck Lorre acknowledges in the book that he had hoped Armitage would join the reunion: "I was just disappointed. We wanted this story to go forward for this family, and obviously Sheldon is a critical part of this family. The Thanksgiving episode that would have included him would have been wonderful to do, but their reasoning is understandable."

Could Iain Armitage Still Return as Sheldon?

Iain Armitage makes clear in the book that he hasn't ruled out revisiting his signature role.

"Neither of us," referring to himself and his mother, "are the kind of people to close ourselves off to any possibility. And I love Montana [Jordan]," he says. "It would be fun to be there with all of them."

That echoes what Armitage told TVLine during a "Young Sheldon" series finale interview in 2024, when he said he would be "honored to" reprise Sheldon on "Georgie & Mandy."

"If I got a call to go back, that'd be so much fun. I'm also just excited to get to sit back on my couch with some popcorn and watch their show because they're so good," he said at the time. "But I could totally see myself getting in the khakis again, putting on the old penny loafers and bow tie, and going back out on the job."

Ahead of the spin-off's premiere, co-creator Steve Holland told TVLine that the writers wanted to establish the new comedy's identity, and that a visit from Sheldon would require a bigger story justification than an appearance by Mary or Meemaw. He also pointed to established "Big Bang Theory" history: Sheldon rarely came home, leaving Georgie to shoulder the family's responsibilities.

In Radloff's book, Holland reiterates that a reunion remains possible: "The door is open, and if he was interested and we could find the right story, we would definitely do it. And honestly, for the show, because Sheldon is in Pasadena and canonically doesn't come back much, it's not a pressing thing, other than we would love to see him and have him on if we could find the right time and the right story to make it work. But it's not because of bad blood."
