United States Of Al Co-Creator Hints At What Might've Happened In Season 3 Of Cancelled CBS Comedy

United States of Al fans did not go quietly into the night when CBS pulled the plug on the Adhir Kalyan/Parker Young comedy after two seasons.

When the cancellation came down in May, hundreds of frustrated viewers took to TVLine's comments section to plead for the sitcom's return. But alas, the series came to a premature end later that month — and the Season 2 finale offered little in the way of closure. That all changes now.

Speaking to TVLine in support of Fox's Call Me Kat (premiering Thursday, Sept. 29), Al co-creator Maria Ferrari — who, as co-showrunner on Kat, is reuniting with Young in Season 3 — indulged our request for answers. Keep scrolling to see how things might've turned out for Al and Riley in Season 3 (and beyond), then hit the comments with your reactions.

THE CRISIS IN AFGHANISTAN

Al's dramatic Season 2 opener mirrored the real-life crisis in Afghanistan — and earned Kalyan the title of TVLine's Performer of the Week. In the episode, Al and the Dugans toiled to get Al's sister Hassina to safety from 7,000 miles away. She managed to escape to Turkey, but Al's mother Gul Bashra, and his cousin Zubair, remained stranded under the Taliban regime.

Asked if Season 3 would have seen Al's family migrate to Ohio, Ferrari answers: "We wanted to introduce as much of Al's family, and as many Afghan characters as we could. But also, I don't think we could have turned our backs on the reality that people like Al's mom are not simply coming to America.

"There's obviously incredible suffering, particularly for women in Afghanistan right now," Ferrari points out. "We would have been remiss not to see that for it is."

RILEY AND VANESSA

In the last episode, Vanessa (Kelli Goss) finally sent in her divorce papers... and broke up with Freddy. She later explained to Riley (Young) that she was in no place to be with anyone right now, but there was still a sense that Hazel's parents would eventually find their way back to each other.

"I feel like we were able to hit a satisfying ending [with them]," Ferrari says. "You got the sense that Riley and Vanessa were potentially beginning to heal and beginning to grow. In that sense, I'm happy with where we left it."

AL AND... LIZZIE?

In Season 2, Al (Kalyan) dated two women at once: Ariana (Azita Ghanizada) and Cindy (Jayma Mays). But in the series finale, Cindy grew increasingly possessive, and Ariana broke things off with Al.

Later on, when Al introduced Cindy to the Dugans, Cindy sensed a spark between Al and Riley's sister Lizzie (Elizabeth Alderfer). Al and Lizzie thought Cindy was crazy... but was she onto something not even they were aware existed?

"I always felt like there was something to explore with Al and Lizzie down the road," Ferrari reveals to TVLine. "It's hard to plan these things. They're organic, and they have to grow on their own. [Fellow co-creator] Dave [Goetsch] and I would always tell people that even we didn't know" — but it sure does sound like it was a possibility.
