Doctor Odyssey Leaves [Spoiler]'s Fate A Mystery Ahead Of Season Finale

The title of Doctor Odyssey Episode 17, "The Wave," at first seems to reference a body of water curling into an arched form and breaking on the shore. But after watching Thursday's penultimate episode, we're thinking it might have a double meaning: Are we waving goodbye to Dr. Max himself? Or to the not-yet-renewed series altogether? Let's recap.

The ABC sudser faces catastrophe after an earthquake strikes while Max is accompanying passengers on land for a brief excursion. The disaster causes an Odyssey guest to fall over a cliffside — albeit a small one — and tear his ACL. (That's it?! The big, dramatic, seismic shift of tectonic plates causes a singular injury, and one as common as a blown knee?!)

Max ends up helping the injured man hobble to shore, hoping to somehow make it out to the boat that is currently floating in the middle of the sea. Massey radios Max, telling him they don't have time to wait for the group. (Though how they ever would have gotten out to that ship remains to be seen.) The earthquake will soon bring tsunami waves, and the captain needs to search for deeper water.

So, Max and his little group of stragglers who missed the boat walk toward higher ground as large waves wash over the coastline. Meanwhile, back on the ship, passengers are living out the plot of Triangle of Sadness — though we wished they hadn't skimped on the vomiting — as the ship rocks to and fro, throwing people across the majestic interior. One man even narrowly escapes being crushed by a chandelier!

Amid all that chaos, Avery and Tristan find time to argue about Avery's mixed signals and Tristan's hurt feelings. They have a tense conversation, with Tristan admitting he wasn't, in fact, content with a strictly physical relationship, and he's hurt by Avery's supposed interest in Max. He leaves the conversation in a huff, taking to the bottle to numb his pain. (Bet the poor guy wishes he could exchange his broken heart with a torn ACL right about now.)

The episode ends with Max stranded in an abandoned church — timely with the recent Conclave and all! — as the ship faces the danger of an aftershock. Massey ditches protocol, risking forthcoming danger to search for his crew member on land. As the earth shakes once again, Max's radio goes silent, and our doctor's status is unknown.
