Wizards Beyond Waverly Place Renewed For Shortened Final Season — Here's Everything We Know So Far

The Russos are coming back for one last spell: "Wizards Beyond Waverly Place" has been renewed for a four-episode third (and final!) season dropping on Disney+ this summer, TVLine has learned.

So, what can fans expect from this farewell event? "Billie, still reeling from losing Alex at the end of Season 2, discovers that the only way to rescue her mother is to reunite with her long-lost father," reads the official logline. "As her family bands together to find Alex, Billie realizes that their combined power is the only way the Russos can defeat the evil plaguing them."

In addition to guest-starring in several Season 3 episodes, executive producer Selena Gomez will  also make her directorial debut with the premiere. Production on the final season begins next week.

A continuation of Disney Channel's "Wizards of Waverly Place," which originally aired from 2007 to 2012, "Beyond" follows a grown-up Justin Russo (David Henrie) as he schools a new generation of spellcasters on the ways of wizardry. This new generation includes Justin's sons Roman (Alkaio Thiele) and Milo (Max Matenko), as well as Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown), a young wizard with a mysterious past — and an even more mysterious destiny — who comes to live with the Russos at the behest of Justin's sister Alex (Gomez).

Additional characters include Justin's wife Giada (Mimi Gianopulos) and Billie's bestie Winter (Taylor Cora), two mortals who regularly find themselves caught up in the family's magical shenanigans.

How did Wizards Beyond Waverly Place Season 2 end?

The show's second season finale, which aired in Oct. 2025, dropped a number of game-changing twists on its unsuspecting viewers, the biggest being that Alex is actually Billie's biological mother. Alex apparently sent Billie to WizTech for her own protection, erasing all memories of her relation to the Russos in the process; not even Justin remembered that Billie is his niece.

Another shocker came when it was revealed that Nicodemus Pennwolf, better known as the evil Lord Morsus (Tobias Jelinek), is really Billie's grandfather. His son Damian Pennwolf turned his back on a life of evil after falling in love with Alex, but Damian's current whereabouts are not currently known.

During the Russos' battle against Lord Morsus in the Season 2 finale, Alex "sacrificed" herself by tackling the evil wizard and pushing him into a rift, promising that she would see Billie again someday. Many confused viewers falsely concluded that Alex died in the fray, but the character is very much alive... somewhere.

"I knew where we were going this season, and I had to bite my lip, because I knew that everyone was going to freak out," David Henrie told TVLine at the time. "For seven months, I was just waiting for the moment [the cast] got to read the script with the ending. When we finally read it, everyone cried at the table read with all the executives and all the different folks that work on the show. Everyone was just deeply moved and touched. It was exactly what I had hoped for."
