Lanterns' Poorna Jagannathan On Those Huge Episode 5 Losses And How Zoe Is 'Blindsided' By John's Free Will — Watch!

Stop us if you've heard this one before: Zoe died in Sunday's "Lanterns." Yes, we know she seemed to kick the bucket in last week's episode, too. But this time, the death stuck. 

In case you need a quick catch-up: Zoe, aka The Manhunter who also was Will Macon's wife, met her end when she came to the motel to kill Hal Jordan... but she didn't realize that John Stewart had his rifle trained on her. 

When she realized she was about to die, she turned, looking directly into the weapon's scope. Right before John pulled the trigger, Zoe smiled — a moment Poorna Jagannathan, who plays the Manhunter, references in our interview above.

Aaron Pierre's character is one of the few who can surprise Zoe, the actress says. "She's programmed a certain way, and she underestimates how not programmed John is," Jagannathan tells TVLine. "She is blindsided by his free-will, actually."

That is borne out in "the last scene, where she looks up and she sees John pointing a gun at her: He has out maneuvered her in her own game, and it is probably the first time in her entire life — clearly the first time — that she has met an equal."

She adds: "I think it's the reason why she smiles before she dies."

Elsewhere in the video above, Garret Dillahunt — who plays the also-killed-off-in-Episode-5 Will Macon — indulges our questions about his highly entertaining nude scene in the series' previous hour. You'll recall it, the one where Will intercepted Hal and John as they snuck onto his property, then demanded that the artistically inclined John draw him in the nude? 

"Everyone had their sense of humor about it," Dillahunt says. "Geeta [Vasant Patel], the director, and the [Director of Photography Armando Salas] had pre-lit it beautifully, so that it was was flattering to me and they were ready to go when I'd step on set."

He recalls trying to "get in as good a shape as possible, because [Will] was supposed to be preternaturally fit for a guy his age because of what Zoe had done for him. I didn't want to let that part of the script down." 

Dillahunt smiles. "I've been naked before on stage or screen, but I thought those days were over, you know?" The resulting scene, he adds, is "kind of funny, in its weird, uncomfortable way."
