Doc Martin Star Martin Clunes To Play Josh Charles' [Spoiler] On Fox Adaptation Best Medicine
Best Medicine's latest cast addition is just what the Doc Martin ordered.
Martin Clunes will guest-star on Fox's upcoming dramedy Best Medicine, TVLine has learned. Clunes played the title role in Doc Martin, the British series on which Best Medicine is based.
Described as a "charmingly complicated one-hour comedy," Best Medicine follows Dr. Martin Best (played by The Good Wife's Josh Charles), a brilliant surgeon who abruptly leaves his illustrious career in Boston to become the general practitioner in a quaint East Coast fishing village where he spent summers as a child. "Unfortunately," per the official logline, "Martin's blunt and borderline rude bedside manner rubs the quirky, needy locals the wrong way, and he quickly alienates the town, even though he's all they've got." However, "What the locals don't know is that Martin's terse demeanor masks a debilitating new phobia and deep-seated psychological issues that prevent him from experiencing true intimacy with anyone."
Clunes will play Martin's father, Dr. Robert Best, "an accomplished, headstrong gastroenterologist whose abrasive demeanor makes Martin look practically cozy by comparison," the character description reads. Robert is estranged from his sister, Sarah (Young Sheldon's Annie Potts), and so his abrupt arrival in town is a giant surprise. But Robert's cold facade covers some deep secrets that just may involve his son...
The cast also includes Josh Segarra (The Other Two) as sheriff Mark Mylow and Abigail Spencer (Timeless) as school teacher Louisa Glasson.
In addition to playing Doc Martin for all 10 seasons of the ITV series, Clunes' resume includes Men Behaving Badly, Doctor Who, No Place Like Home and Manhunt.
Best Medicine does not yet have a premiere date on Fox.
