HBO's Harry Potter Series Finds Its Harry, Ron And Hermione — Meet The Young Actors Playing The Trio

Unfurl those red and gold banners, because it's a big day for Gryffindor House.

Eight months after opening a casting call for Harry Potter's central trio of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, HBO has found the actors that will play the young wizards in its forthcoming Harry Potter series.

Newcomer Dominic McLaughlin will star as Harry Potter, with Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. Get a first look at the trio below:

"After an extraordinary search led by casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann, we are delighted to announce we have found our Harry, Hermione, and Ron," showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod said in a statement. "The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen. We would like to thank all the tens of thousands of children who auditioned. It's been a real pleasure to discover the plethora of young talent out there."

McLaughlin, Stout and Stanton will respectively inherit their roles from Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson, who portrayed Harry, Ron and Hermione in all eight of the Harry Potter films.

In September 2024, HBO began the casting process for Harry, Ron and Hermione by announcing a call for U.K.- or Ireland-based children who would be age 9 to 11 in April 2025. The bulletin stated HBO's commitment to "inclusive, diverse casting" and encouraged interested parties to "submit qualified performers, without regard to ethnicity, sex, disability, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other basis protected by law unless otherwise specifically indicated."

HBO has not clarified how many seasons its Harry Potter series might run, but the show is described as a "faithful adaptation" of J.K. Rowling's novels that will "dive deep into each of the iconic books." Gardiner (His Dark Materials) serves as writer, executive producer and showrunner, while Mylod (Succession, Game of Thrones) will direct multiple episodes and exec-produce. Rowling is also on board as an EP.

This trio joins previously announced cast members John Lithgow (3rd Rock From the Sun) as Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore; Janet McTeer (Ozark) as Transfiguration professor Minerva McGonagall; Paapa Essiedu (I May Destroy You) as Potions master Severus Snape; Nick Frost (Into the Badlands) as groundskeeper Rubeus Hagrid; Paul Whitehouse (The Fast Show) as Hogwarts caretaker Argus Filch; and British stage vet Luke Thallon as poor, stuttering Quirinus Quirrell, who teaches Defense Against the Dark Arts during Harry's first year at Hogwarts.

Production on the series will begin this summer. Your thoughts on the newest iterations of Harry, Ron and Hermione? Drop 'em in a comment below.
