DWTS Season 23 Odds
dwts-season-23-rick-perry
Pros and Cons: If this photo — in which the former Texas governor is wearing a suit, for some reason — is any indication, Perry's performance on the dance floor will be awkward, stuffy and forced. Though Slater is desperately in need of a strong partner — heading into her sixth Dancing season, she has yet to make the finale — we don't think she'll find success in a 60-something politician who has become a meme at least three times.
Odds: 50-1
dwts-season-23-james-hinchcliffe
Pros and Cons: In her seven previous seasons as a pro, Burgess has proven she can clear any choreographing hurdle in her path. (When you can get Andy Dick to dance semi-successfully, you know you're good.) But Hinchcliffe's lack of dancing experience won't be the only obstacle; the race car driver isn't the most recognizable name on Season 23's cast list, either, which could lead to a major shortage of votes right out of the gate.
Odds: 40-1
dwts-season-23-babyface
Pros and Cons: Holker has a habit of getting paired with musicians — Riker Lynch, Andy Grammer — and she's once again got a partner with natural rhythm and musicality. (At least, we hope.) Still, at 57 years old, Edmonds will need to meet the energy level of his younger competitors, especially on such fast-paced evenings as Latin Night... if he gets there.
Odds: 35-1
dwts-season-23-terra-jole
Pros and Cons: Amy Purdy, Noah Galloway and Season 22 champ Nyle DiMarco have all proven that having a physical limitation doesn't necessarily lead to a brief Dancing career. That said, a unique challenge is presented by Jolé's height, which could make choreography — especially partner work — particularly tricky. Plus, Farber is only in his third season as a competing pro, and he may not bring in the votes that franchise staples like Derek Hough and Val Chmerkovskiy can guarantee.
Odds: 30-1
dwts-season-23-ryan-lochte
Pros and Cons: We know, we know — after his tall tale during the Rio Olympics, the swimmer doesn't deserve another moment in the public eye. We agree. But Lochte remains on the Season 23 roster regardless — and the buzz surrounding his casting, combined with the return of two-time champion Burke, is just what Lochte needs to stay in the competition beyond the season premiere.
Odds: 25-1
dwts-season-23-amber-rose
Pros and Cons: Of the 14 Dancing seasons that Chmerkovskiy has competed on, he's reached the finale five times and nabbed the Mirrorball trophy once with ice dancer Meryl Davis. Still, the seasoned pro — who isn't known for being the kindest partner — has his work cut out for him in Rose, a brassy TV personality with little previous dance experience. Not to mention, DWTS voters have never been particularly kind to anyone in the Kardashians' social circle.
Odds: 20-1
dwts-season-23-vanilla-ice
Pros and Cons: It's been a long time since Vanilla Ice hopped, jumped and gyrated through his "Ice, Ice, Baby" music video — and all the '90s nostalgia in the world won't turn the rapper into a bona fide ballroom pro. Fortunately, he's got Carson on his side, who has previously transformed a football player and a Bachelor into decent dancers. We don't see a Mirrorball in Ice's future, but Carson's leadership might just save him from an early send-off.
Odds: 16-1
dwts-season-23-jana-kramer
Pros and Cons: Since ending her run on One Tree Hill, Kramer has pivoted to a career in country music, which all but guarantees a dedicated voting fanbase. The downside: Savchenko, Kramer's partner, has only appeared on one other Dancing cycle — Season 16, where he finished in 10th place. To pull ahead of other fan-favorite pairs, Kramer and Savchenko will have to be flawless from the start — no pressure!
Odds: 12-1
dwts-season-23-maureen-mccormick
Pros and Cons: Despite the best efforts of social media, last season's #FreeArtem hashtag — which practically begged for Chigvintsev to be rid of his partnership with Mischa Barton — seemingly fell on deaf ears. Paired with his third "woman of a certain age" in four seasons, Chigvintsev once again has the challenge of choreographing for someone with little dance experience and likely no interest in pulling off acrobatic lifts. On the other hand, McCormick has the potential to bring in votes from nostalgic Brady Bunch viewers, and her past struggles with drugs and depression could make for an irresistible primetime redemption story.
Odds: 10-1
dwts-season-23-jake-t-austin
Pros and Cons: A longtime Dancing troupe member, Johnson is making her debut this season as a professional competitor, which could earn her more than a few "Aw, it's her first pro season!" votes. Unfortunately, the DWTS demographic isn't quite the same crowd that digs Wizards of Waverly Place, which could cause viewers to tune out from Austin's Season 23 trajectory.
Odds: 8-1
dwts-season-23-calvin-johnson
Pros and Cons: Not since Season 16 has a pro football player reached the Dancing finale, and it's been even longer — Season 14, in fact — since an NFLer hoisted the Mirrorball trophy. (Jacoby Jones and Donald Driver, respectively.) Johnson faces stiff competition from other athletes in the Season 23 cast, but he's also got a solid partner in Arnold, who excels at teaching muscular gents (Alek Skarlatos, Wanyá Morris) how to be light on their feet. With Arnold's guidance and Johnson's athleticism, this duo could very well close in on the championship.
Odds: 6-1
dwts-season-23-marilu-henner
Pros and Cons: Sure, the Taxi alumna isn't a typical partner for Hough — that is to say, she's not a 20-year-old shoe-in for the finale. But don't write Henner off just yet; the actress has been dancing since she was a child. And though Henner might not be a ballroom expert, Hough's innovative choreography and impressive Dancing track record — nine appearances in the finale and six wins — make them the ultimate dark-horse pair.
Odds: 4-1
dwts-season-23-laurie-hernandez
Pros and Cons: We don't want to get ahead of ourselves here, but how is Hernandez not a lock for that Mirrorball? A member of the Rio Olympics' beloved Final Five gymnastics team — who also became Internet-famous for her adorable "I got this" pep talk — Hernandez has already proven she's got the flexibility, rhythm and grace to set the dance floor ablaze. Her biggest challenge? At just 16 years old, Hernandez might lack the necessary maturity for her partner's typically intense choreography. If she can perform beyond her years, there's nothing stopping this gold medalist from taking home the top prize once more.
Odds: 2-1
