Golden Globes 2016: Best/Worst Moments

golden-globes-best-worst-amy-schumer-matt-lauer

After NBC's Matt Lauer warned nominee Amy Schumer that a 20-second delay was "all we can do," the Trainwreck star couldn't help but turn his remark into a delicious joke. "I'm taking that down — all Matt Lauer can do is 20 seconds. No judgments!"

After host Ricky Gervais' opening zinger about the trend of all-female remakes in Hollywood — which he lauded for yielding "guaranteed box-office results, and they don't have to spend too much money on the cast!" — Melissa McCarthy (star of the upcoming Ghostbusters reboot) chuckled heartily before giving an overly enthusiastic expression of approval.

"It's a bit of metal that some nice old confused journalists wanted to give you in person," explained three-time winner Gervais, in his opening monologue, "so they could meet you and have a selfie with you."

golden-globes-best-worst-jonah-hill-channing-tatum

Maybe our expectations were too high when Channing Tatum introduced his co-presenter as The Revenant's bear — aka Jonah Hill in a teddy hood — but not a single one of his basic-level jokes ("I'm a two-year-old bear from the Sierra Mountains, and you took a chance on me") landed. Jane Fonda's stern expression from the audience said it all.

golden-globes-best-worst-ricky-gervais-2

Does Matt Damon get a trophy for being able to smile after Gervais introduced him as "the only person who Ben Affleck hasn't cheated on"?

gloden-globes-best-worst-jaimie-alexander-amber-heard

"Dude, who's typing this sh-t?" Blindspot's incredulous Jaimie Alexander asked Amber Heard, after failing to do some kind of pre-planned singing introduction of the Best Actor in a Limited Series or TV Movie prize.

golden-globes-best-worst-jamie-foxx

English actress Lily James' look of bewilderment as Jamie Foxx crassly discussed their "first time" gave way to "OK, whatever" laughter when he declared the Best Original Score had gone to the not-even-nominated Straight Outta Compton. (For the record, the actual honoree was The Hateful Eight — whose director Quentin Tarantino drew Foxx's side-eye after saying winner Ennio Morricone was a world-class composer undeserving of being stuck in the "ghetto" of film scorers.)

golden-globes-best-worst-america-ferrera-eva-longoria

(Please read this banter between NBC comrades Eva Longoria and America Ferrera knowing that the Golden Globes' own social-media team mistook the latter actress for Gina Rodriguez during the Globes' nomination announcements last month.)

"Hi, I'm Eva Longoria, not Eva Mendes!"

"And hi, I'm America Ferrerra, not Gina Rodriguez!"

"And neither one of us is Rosario Dawson."

"Well said, Salma. "

"Thank you, Charo."

golden-globes-best-worst-aziz-ansari

Slow clap for Master of None's Aziz Ansari, who brought a copy of "Losing to Jeffrey Tambor With Dignity" to the ceremony. (Who'dve thunk he'd wind up losing to Mozart in the Jungle's Gael Garcia Bernal, rather than Transparent's critically acclaimed star.)

golden-globes-best-worst-sylvester-stallone

No single winner received more rapturous response than Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture winner Sylvester Stallone, last nominated in 1977 and declaring in 2016 that the view from the podium is "so beautiful now."

golden-globes-best-worst-ken-jeong-kevin-hart

Moments after Gervais pointed out the ceremony had already gone on too long — prior to the two-hour mark, mind you — Kevin Hart and Ken Jeong scored a grand total of zero laughs with their bit about whether laughter is the best medicine or, conversely, if medicine is the best medicine.

golden-globes-best-worst-mel-gibson-ricky-gervais

Gervais once more found himself teeing up Mel Gibson's appearance as a presenter (remember when he made that "I like a drink as much as the next man" joke in 2010?). So what better way to deflect any awkwardness than by complimenting him — and tearing down the media's newest pick for Least Favorite Celeb in the process? Thus, we got the following punchline: "I'd rather have a drink with him in his hotel room tonight than Bill Cosby."

golden-globes-best-worst-mr-robot

The sublimely amazing (yet under-the-radar USA Network standout) Mr. Robot as Best Drama Series? Oh hellllll yeah, Hollywood Foreign Press Association!

golden-globes-best-worst-alejandro-inarritu

By our unofficial count, close to a dozen winners and presenters found themselves bleeped by the NBC censors during the 2016 Globes telecast. But what exactly did The Revenant's Alejandro Inarritu have to say about star Leonardo DiCaprio that landed him in such dubious/esteemed territory? Only the live audience knows for sure!

golden-globes-best-worst-taraji-p-henson

Taraji P. Henson may have been teasing with her "get off my train!" podium moment — but she bought herself a few extra seconds of a well-earned acceptance speech while collecting her statuette as Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series as Empire's ferocious Cookie Lyon. "Please wrap? Wait a minute!" she exclaimed. "I waited 20 years for this. You gonna wait!" Oh, and Anika, that was an awards-show moment.

golden-globes-best-worst-jim-carrey

After giddily sharing that, at night, he dreams about "being three-time Golden Globe-winning actor Jim Carrey — because then I would be enough," the Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind star reminded the star-studded crowd of its limitations. "But these are important, these awards," Carrey offered. "I don't want you to think [about the fact that] if you blew up our solar system alone, you wouldn't be able to find us or any of human history with the naked eye. From our perspective, this is huge." OK, but dude, maybe just tell us what won the trophy for Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy?

golden-globes-best-worst-leonardo-dicaprio

The Revenant's Leonardo DiCaprio ticked all the boxes of thanking his competitors, his collaborators and his team, but he didn't let the in-house orchestra stop him there. "I want to share this award with all the first-nations' people represented in this film and all the indigenous communities around the world," he said. "It is time that we recognize your history and protect your indigenous lands from corporate interest and people out there who want to exploit them. It is time we heard your voice and protected your planet for future generations."
