HTGAWM Season 5 Burning Questions

VIOLA DAVIS

DID ANNALISE GIVE UP A CHILD FOR ADOPTION?

During Annalise's war of words with Gov. Birkhead, the words "adoption paperwork" were dropped into the conversation, and they blew up Annalise's whole world — so much so that she fell off the wagon for the first time in months. But the topic wasn't revisited much before Murder went on winter hiatus, leaving us to wonder if Annalise once gave up a child for adoption, or perhaps tried unsuccessfully to adopt a child herself.

WHAT REALLY HAPPENED TO BONNIE'S SON?

If we take the tearful confession of Bonnie's sister at face value, then we technically already know what happened to Bonnie's newborn child: After Julie stole him from the hospital, she buried him in the woods in order to spare him from a life of abuse at the hands of Bonnie's father. But something seems off about Julie's story, and it seems likely that the fate of Bonnie's child will come up again before the season is through.

TIMOTHY HUTTON

WHAT DID EMMETT CRAWFORD DO?

Murder has dropped several clues thus far about the misconduct allegations that got Timothy Hutton's character in hot water this season — but we have yet to learn the full story. Though it remains to be seen if Emmett will bring Annalise back to Caplan & Gold so she can repair his reputation, we're hoping the scandalous truth comes out sooner rather than later.

htgawm-frank-the-one

WHO IS 'THE ONE'?

All season long, Frank has been chatting on the phone with someone labeled "The One" in his contacts, consulting with him or her about the Gabriel Maddox situation. Though we have yet to learn The One's identity, it seems he or she has crucial intel about Gabriel and, potentially, Sam Keating. (Though at the very least, we can rule out Bonnie and Laurel as The One, since neither of them knew Gabriel's true identity until Frank told them.) As we head into the back half of Season 5, we're especially anxious to learn who's on the other end of those mysterious phone calls.

KARLA SOUZA

WHAT HAPPENED TO LAUREL'S MOM?

Ever since Gabriel Maddox showed up at Middleton, Laurel's messed-up family has been put on the back burner. But we never exactly got closure on the fate of Laurel's mom. Yes, Laurel says she didn't harm her mother, and she says her mom was responsible for shipping Christopher's baptism gown to Philadelphia... but we haven't actually seen Sandrine since the Season 4 finale, when Laurel came home with mysterious scratches on her arms. Murder has plenty of other irons in the fire right now, so it's possible that this storyline will remain a mystery for good — but we certainly wouldn't mind a little resolution.

GLYNN TURMAN

WHO'S RESPONSIBLE FOR NATE SR.'S DEATH?

In the fall finale, we were led to believe that Bonnie's beau, Ronald Miller, was responsible for Nate Sr.'s death, given that he was spotted at the very payphone that placed a call to Nate Sr.'s holding facility before he died. But the evidence that implicated Miller was all quite circumstantial, and there's a strong possibility that he had nothing to do with the murder. Could Gov. Birkhead have been the one responsible? Or perhaps it was Emmett Crawford, seeking revenge on Annalise after she left Caplan & Gold? On this show, the list of morally gray characters is really, really long.

CHARLIE WEBER, LIZA WEIL

WHAT EXACTLY DOES FRANK KNOW?

Speaking of Mr. Delfino, here's hoping the new Season 5 episodes shed some more light on what exactly Frank knows about Gabriel Maddox. When Frank first laid eyes on Gabriel during Middleton's orientation last spring, he informed The One that "her kid is here." Was he referring to Gabriel's mother, Vivian Maddox, when he mentioned "her"? And if he knew that Gabriel was Vivan's son, then surely he also knew that Sam Keating is Gabriel's father — but then why was he so surprised to find Gabriel's birth certificate in the midseason finale, which confirmed who his parents are? (And while we're at it: There is no Pepe Silvia!)

ROME FLYNN

WHAT IS GABRIEL UP TO?

Gabriel's enigmatic presence at Middleton has been a major focus of Murder's fifth season. But even though his connection to Annalise has been revealed, it's still unclear what exactly he wants. Does he want to take Annalise down? Is he doing someone's dirty work? And what's up with that fake ID and wad of cash he's got stashed away in his apartment? Inquiring minds want to know!
