Chicago Fire EP Teases Mysterious 'Bad Boy' New Hire Set To Challenge Stella's Authority In Season 14
Chicago Fire's newest recruit is going to shake things up at Firehouse 51.
Season 14 of the NBC drama will see the arrival of Sal Vasquez (played by On Call's Brandon Larracuente), who will act as the catalyst for all kinds of changes within the team, executive producer Andrea Newman told TVLine.
"I think his relationship with his lieutenant, Kidd, in particular, is really fun," Newman teased. But "fun" doesn't mean easy.
"He's kind of a rebel, he's kind of a bad boy coming in," Newman shared. "He's had a lot of problems with authority, personally and professionally."
Luckily, Stella has experience with sassy new firefighters testing her, and has earned a reputation for her ability "to whip people who need a little help into shape," per Newman.
"We'll come to see that [Stella] might just be the person who can manage [Vasquez] and keep him employed in the CFD and bring all of his best qualities to the front and try not to kill him — and have him kill her! — in the meantime," Newman said.
But what brings this new hire to Firehouse 51?
"There is a mystery as to why, when all of this is going on and all these layoffs are happening and brownouts and new policies happening in the city, why is this guy being moved, not only to a new position, but to what's known as the best firehouse in the city? How did that happen? And why did that happen?" Newman shared, adding that the firehouse will share these questions with the audience as they search for answers in the first few episodes of Season 14.
Amid all of this intrigue surrounding Vasquez, you might be thinking: A mysterious bad boy firefighter challenging authority? Sounds kind of dreamy! Is that toxic? Maybe, but we aren't here to judge — and neither is Newman! "He does sound dreamy," she said. "And believe me, Novak has something to say about that."
