Hacks Cast, EPs Name Their Dream Guest Stars — Who Do You Want To See Tango With Deborah?
Carol Burnett, Hal Linden, Christopher Lloyd, Patton Oswalt. Max comedy Hacks has welcomed an impressive array of guest stars throughout its four-season run, a run that shows zero signs of slowing down any time soon.
In Thursday's episode, Deborah shared a heartfelt moment with the legendary Burnett (playing herself) following a stage fright incident that occurred during rehearsal. Burnett gave Deborah some sound advice that helped her get through her premiere taping, officially launching her late-night series into the stratosphere and giving us an inkling of hope for the stand-up-turned-host and her head writer.
With Burnett's sweet surprise cameo in mind, we asked Hacks' cast members and co-creators: Who would you want to see pop up next to go head-to-head with Jean Smart's Deborah Vance? Pesky factors like scheduling and budgets, be damned! For starters, Megan Stalter's pick feels sooooo Kayla: Pop icon Britney Spears.
"I just think that she would be so fun and I love her music," the actress tells TVLine. "We've had so many incredible guest stars. Wouldn't it be fun to have some of our family members in the show?" She then suggests a pick that catches both myself and Paul W. Downs (Jimmy) off guard: Downs' own mother!
"My mom would love to do it," Downs says. "[She's] in hair and makeup right now. She's ready to go!"
Statler also mentions that co-creator/executive producer Lucia Aniello — an alumna of the Upright Citizens Brigade who's appeared in shows like Broad City and Netflix's The Characters — would be a perfect pick to mix it up with Deb and Ava.
"I would love that too! She is so funny," Downs says of his real-life wife. "I would love the world to see that."
Ava's portrayer, Hannah Einbinder, is stumped at first. "Oh God, this is a good question," she says with a smile. "Maybe a musician. Maybe Lady Gaga would be cool. Like her and Deborah are friends."
A Vegas tie-in where the two dynamos share a stage? Sign us up for that mayhem. (Wink!) And Mother Monster and Spears weren't the only singers brought up. Aniello throws out another exceptional choice: Hole frontwoman Courtney Love.
"She's very Hacks, actually!" agrees co-creator/EP Jen Statsky.
"She's so Hacks." Aniello replies. "Misunderstood!"
Unsurprisingly, Conan O'Brien's name is also in the mix. "We're huge fans of Conan and obviously the history of late night," says Statsky. "Everything he did for the format is such an important part of this season. That would be a cameo we'd be very excited to have."
"There's a running joke about wanting Cher to be on the show," she adds, "and Joy Behar, too. There's a lot of people we're still trying to get on the show."
"There's a runner about Cher not doing the show, and we'd like to make that not true," says Aniello. "We'd love for Cher to say, 'No, I do want to do this show,' so yeah, she knows our number." [Laughs]
I tell Aniello about Statler and Downs' suggestion, and she doesn't shoot it down.
"I would love to be on the show," she says. "It just feels like I'm never going to write something [just] so that I can be on the show. It would only be if [a] character made sense for me to play, which hasn't happened. I don't know if it will happen."
"She is a great performer," confirms Statsky. "Smelly Pu–y Donna from Broad City. Look it up!"
