Black Bird Trailer: See Ray Liotta As Taron Egerton's Dad In Apple Thriller

Apple TV+ is offering a first look at the late, great Ray Liotta's last TV role.

The streamer has released a trailer for the psychological thriller Black Bird, which sees the Goodfellas star on the right side of the law for a change — a decorated policeman whose son, played by Rocketman's Taron Egerton, faces 10 years behind bars.

"I never wanted this for you," Liotta's Big Jim Keene tells newly incarcerated Jimmy. "I wanted a totally different life: a steady paycheck, kids, a family...." And now, the only way out is an extremely high-risk endeavor.

Egerton's Jimmy agrees to enter a maximum-security prison for the criminally insane, where he is to befriend suspected serial killer Larry Hall, "elicit a confession and find out where the bodies of several young girls are buried before Hall's appeal goes through," according to the official logline. Paul Walter Hauser (Cobra Kai) plays the aforementioned Hall; Greg Kinnear (Shining Vale) and Sepideh Moafi (The L Word: Generation Q) round out the principal ensemble.

The series, which hails from executive producer Dennis Lehane (Mystic River), was adapted from the true-crime memoir "In With the Devil: A Fallen Hero, A Serial Killer, and A Dangerous Bargain for Redemption" by James Keene and Hillel Levin. The first two episodes drop Friday, July 8, followed by one new episode every Friday through Aug. 5.

Liotta, best known for his work in films such as Goodfellas and Field of Dreams, died in May at the age of 67. The acclaimed actor, who got his start on NBC's Another World, accrued many TV credits throughout his career, including an Emmy-winning guest role as ex-con Charlie Metcalf in a memorable Season 11 episode of ER. Series-regular gigs included CBS' short-lived drama Smith (from ER boss John Wells), which ran for seven episodes in 2006; History Channel miniseries Texas Rising, which aired in 2015; and the role of Lt. Matt Wozniak in Jennifer Lopez's NBC cop drama Shades of Blue, which ran for three seasons and ended in 2018. He most recently co-starred as Gordon Evans in the third and final season of Prime Video's Hanna, which was released last November.
