Dancing With The Stars Recap: Which Couples Should Get The Boot In Tuesday's Double Elimination?

We appear to have gone back in time a couple of years, because Dancing With the Stars is airing on a Monday. (But it's just not the same without Freddie Highmore's Good Doctor showing up immediately after the episode, eh?)

After taking last week off to accommodate the vice presidential debate, Dancing is back for a two-night event this week: Monday's episode was inspired by the iconic variety show Soul Train and featured no elimination; Tuesday's outing will pay tribute to hair metal bands and will send two couples home in the second double elimination of the season.

Plus, to get us all in the Soul Train spirit, Monday's Dancing installment welcomed guest judge Rosie Perez, who got her start in showbiz as a dancer on the syndicated musical series. Above all — even more than passion and musicality — Rosie wanted our couples to bring "the boogie." Can the boogie be defined? It can't. Do you know the boogie when you see it? Absolutely.

There's still another full night of performances, scores and votes ahead of us this week, but we'll ask anyway: After Soul Train Night, at least, which Dancing With the Stars couples would you send home this week? Keep scrolling for a full breakdown of Monday's performances, then give us your thoughts on the episode!

Phaedra Parks and Val Chmerkovskiy

DANCE STYLE: Quickstep (to "Think" by Aretha Franklin)

It's taken 33 seasons, but is Carrie Ann Inaba actually getting... soft?! Phaedra and Val's opening quickstep, while very fun to watch and quite strong when they were in hold, faltered a bit when Phaedra was left to her own devices. After a couple of footwork mistakes and what seemed like palpable nerves on Phaedra's part, I was surprised to see Carrie Ann award this dance an eight. And so early in the season! Derek and Bruno's sevens, meanwhile, seemed more apt.

JUDGES' SCORE: 30 out of 40

Ilona Maher and Alan Bersten

DANCE STYLE: Foxtrot (to "Lady Marmalade" by LaBelle)

I'm repeating myself here, but Ilona truly does deserve a medal in the fictional Olympic event of Dancing With the Stars Improvement. (Listen, I'd look for it on Gold Zone.) Though she did have a misstep about halfway through this foxtrot, her growth from Weeks 1 to 3 has really been astonishing, with particular respect to her elegant arm shaping. There's a grace on display here that I'm very excited to see get even stronger.

JUDGES' SCORE: 30 out of 40

Eric Roberts and Britt Stewart

DANCE STYLE: Foxtrot (to "Let's Stay Together" by Al Green)

Y'know, I've gotta hand it to Eric: This was easily his best routine so far, and not in the backhanded, "Well, at least he moved this time!" sort of way. It actually was better! Perfect? No. Deserving of a seven, Carrie Ann? Let's not get ahead of ourselves. But after a stiff and awkward couple of weeks, what a nice change to see Eric looking more confident and relaxed out there.

JUDGES' SCORE: 24 out of 40

Stephen Nedoroscik and Rylee Arnold

DANCE STYLE: Quickstep (to "Superstition" by Stevie Wonder)

Here's an observation I know will get me in trouble in the comments section, but I'm sticking to it: Stephen reminds me, just a little bit, of onetime Mirrorball winner Bobby Bones. Yes, technique-wise, even Stephen's worst performance is leaps and bounds ahead of Bobby's best — but! There's a similar overexcitement at play here, which was often what kept Bobby from realizing his full potential on the dance floor, and Stephen's at risk of plateauing if he doesn't find that refinement quickly. (That said, he appears at zero risk of elimination, if the comments on Dancing With the Stars' official Instagram account are any indication. The boy's got fans!)

JUDGES' SCORE: 30 out of 40

Brooks Nader and Gleb Savchenko

DANCE STYLE: Rumba (to "Sexual Healing" by Marvin Gaye)

Proving that even a pre-taped episode of Dancing With the Stars can be unpredictable (Monday's installment was filmed on Oct. 1), the evening's spiciest performance unexpectedly became its most awkward, when Gleb could be seen rolling his eyes and saying, "OK, whatever" after he and Brooks got sevens across the board for their rumba. Those paddles felt appropriate, though: Brooks tended to halt her movements during the transitions, and the routine's opening seconds were wasted on a therapist-patient conceit that added zero rumba content. Sorry, Gleb!

JUDGES' SCORE: 28 out of 40

Joey Graziadei and Jenna Johnson

DANCE STYLE: Jive (to "Shout" by The Isley Brothers)

The densely packed content! The backflip! The clean-shaven face! Joey really showed us new facet after new facet with this jam-packed jive... and after this performance, which earned the first nines of the season, I'm doubling down on my prediction that Joey will take home the Mirrorball.

JUDGES' SCORE: 34 out of 40

Dwight Howard and Daniella Karagach

DANCE STYLE: Cha-Cha (to "Let's Groove" by Earth, Wind & Fire)

We've seen many a video package over the years that hints at a potentially wobbly performance to come, usually because a contestant got sick or had to travel across the country for other commitments, cutting into their rehearsal time. And more often than not, the dance works out just fine — just not this time. Dwight was obviously having a ball, and the scoring wasn't too grim, but he fully invented some chunks of choreography out there. (Hey, kudos for the improvisational skills!)

JUDGES' SCORE: 23 out of 40

Danny Amendola and Witney Carson

DANCE STYLE: Foxtrot (to "Dancing Machine" by Jackson 5)

Danny earned his first eights with this foxtrot, which is excellent! Less excellent, though, is that he was one of several contestants to earn a 30 out of 40 on Monday night, which threatens to keep him in the middle of the pack despite his noticeable growth. Here's hoping Hair Metal Night can give him more of a distinct breakout moment.

JUDGES' SCORE: 30 out of 40

Reginald VelJohnson and Emma Slater

DANCE STYLE: Foxtrot (to "I Can See Clearly Now" by Johnny Nash)

It's tough to say how many more weeks Reginald has in the competition when he covers so little of the dance floor in his performances (and his moments in hold during this foxtrot were, truthfully, shaky). But it's obvious that Reginald's presence on this show is bringing profound joy, and his partnership with Emma is a beautiful thing. We don't need to overthink it.

JUDGES' SCORE: 21 out of 40

Jenn Tran and Sasha Farber

DANCE STYLE: Viennese Waltz (to "Fallin'" by Alicia Keys)

Look out, Brooks and Gleb! Jenn and Sasha are coming for that chemistry crown, as evidenced by this sensual and magnetic visit to the ballroom floor. Jenn continues to prove that she's a contender — her leg positioning on that prolonged, alllmost-a-lift twirl sequence was magnificent — and I was pleased to see her avoid the evening's 30-out-of-40 trend by one point.

JUDGES' SCORE: 31 out of 40

Chandler Kinney and Brandon Armstrong

DANCE STYLE: Cha-Cha (to "It's Tricky" by Run-D.M.C.)

There were a lot of one-word reactions to this cha-cha at the judges' table: Vibe! Fly! Cool! Style! Allow me to add one more: Dayyy-um.

JUDGES' SCORE: 36 out of 40
