Doctor Odyssey's 10 Best Guest Stars, Ranked!

Doctor Odyssey has welcomed aboard too many guest stars to count — but who has left the biggest impression?

As the series approaches the end of its freshman run — which may or may not be the series' end, as ABC has yet to renew the Ryan Murphy sudser — it's time to look back at all the guest stars worth celebrating.

In the list below, we've rounded up the 10 most memorable actors who set sail with The Odyssey, from 9-1-1's Angela Bassett to Bob the Drag Queen. And though each actor's time on the ship was brief, it was impactful. Whether they added fuel to our Fever Dream Theory, delivered emotional arcs or simply brought great vibes, these are the visitors who stood out the most.

10. Tom McGowan

McGowan was one of Doctor Odyssey's first guest stars, and he made quite the splash! Who knew someone could become ill from eating too many shrimp? It was honestly impressive that McGowan's Burt could achieve such a triumph. McGowan's brief arc helped set the tone for the series, kicking things off with an entertaining, over-the-top medical emergency.

9. Gina Gershon

Gershon was one of the guests who had the pleasure of boarding the ship not once, but twice! Her first appearance delivered fresh energy, challenging Massey with exaggerated sexual advances. (At one point, she announced she had a "lady boner" for the guy!) While some guests have served as random mechanisms for medical mayhem, Gershon's Lenore provided some much-needed background: Her husband owns the cruise line, so it's possible she'll even resurface again.

8. Donna Mills

The Knots Landing vet acted as a foil to our uptight doctor in Episode 12 — showing us that we just love seeing Max mad! Mills shared a majority of her scenes with Joshua Jackson's lead doctor, allowing the Max-Tristan-Avery dynamic to breathe a little. Plus, Mills' Olivia sticks out to us because her story revolved around COVID, reminding us that it's possible Max hasn't yet recovered!

7. Dianna Agron

The series took a swing when Agron boarded the ship as Massey's late wife. Whether the Glee alum was an actual ghost or a manifestation of Massey's own imagination remains to be seen — but we're pushing for the former! Her appearance illustrated exactly what the series is striving for: a perfect blend of kookiness and emotional depth.

6. Shania Twain

During Twain's first guest appearance in Episode 2, we thought, "Hey, this is fun!" But when the country music icon returned in Episode 12, we said, "Let's go, girl!" While Season 1 has gotten a bit bogged down by Avery's pregnancy journey, Twain's own pregnancy storyline delivered the excitement we want and need from the sudser. She's a medical miracle! A mystery! And she has increased the stakes of the series: Will Captain Massey quit his position to raise his baby on land? Or will the baby be raised at sea in Season 2? It's anybody's guess!

5. John Stamos

Have mercy, John Stamos understood the assignment. During his Episode 7 stint as Captain Massey's brother Craig, he brought the drama, and his story was fairly emotional by Doctor Odyssey standards. Stamos' depiction of a recovering alcoholic helped portray the complex ways addiction can affect familial relationships. Plus, we're always excited to get clues about our crew's lives on land.

4. Justin Jedlica

Is Jedlica the biggest, buzziest star we've seen board The Odyssey? No. But his appearance was absolutely crucial in advancing our Fever Dream Theory. In Episode 3, Dr. Max shared with the crew that he had watched Jedlica's reality TV show while recovering from COVID in the hospital. This paved the way for our 9-1-1 crossover conversations: Perhaps Max watched that other Ryan Murphy series during his hospital stay, too, keeping our conspiracy alive. Not to mention, Jedlica's on-screen death helped us understand how vital death sequences are in understanding our Fever Dream Theory. Thank you, Justin, for your service!

3. Bob the Drag Queen

With Bob the Drag Queen's appearance, the show finally leaned into the campiness we so desperately want it to deliver. The queen lip-synced for her life to Chappell Roan's "Hot to Go" — which was almost perfect except for the fact that her wig caught fire as she sashayed too close to an open flame. But that ultimately added to Bob the Drag Queen's appearance. When her wig caught fire, exposing her bare scalp, she delivered an emotional performance about finding confidence and self-esteem.

2. Adrianne Palicki

During her two-episode arc, Palicki's Brooke had clear chemistry with The Odyssey crew. It was a pleasure to finally see someone really challenging Dr. Max when it comes to making medical diagnoses and decisions. Until the shark attacks brought Brooke on board, most of the crew drama was obsessively focused on Avery. Palicki's presence allowed the crew to explore other relationships and new working dynamics as they faced a power outage with Brooke and her team.

1. Angela Bassett

I mean, Angela Bassett did the thing. We had high hopes for Athena Grant's appearance on Doctor Odyssey, and the actress delivered by making big waves. Bassett's performance stood out from the rest, as Athena offered Avery advice about motherhood rooted in authentic emotion. Bassett's presence felt dynamic and dramatic amid her believable — but fun! — cruise ship panic. Plus, we loved watching Athena do her usual job, but this time, in a ball gown!
