I Am Not Okay With This: 5 Things We Would've Liked To See Before Netflix's Abrupt Cancellation

Three years after I Am Not Okay With This was cancelled after only its first season, we're still not OK with all of the loose threads the Netflix show didn't get a chance to tie up.

I Am Not Okay With This is based on Charles Forsman's graphic novel, which follows 17-year-old Sydney Novak as she navigates school, relationships and her home life, all while learning to control her newly discovered telekinetic powers

The show first premiered in February 2020 but was not picked up for a second season, a victim of the COVID-19 pandemic's halting or ending production of many shows, including Netflix's The Society and GLOW.

I Am Not Okay With This is the engaging story of Sydney learning about her powers and herself as a person. Viewers who were once Novak's age can relate to some of the challenges teenagers face such as asking someone to homecoming or dealing with the popular students. Additionally, the sci-fi element of the show — through Novak's powers— is similar to coming of age films like E.T. and Back to the Future.

And speaking of nostalgia, the show's soundtrack, which includes Rick Springfield's Jessie's Girl and Karen Dalton's Something On Your Mind, really enhances the show's timeless feeling. Though I Am Not Okay With This won't be seeing another season anytime soon, that didn't stop us from coming up with some ideas about what we would've liked to see in a second season. Scroll through the list below for our picks, then let us know in the comments what you would have liked to see in a second season.

MORE LIAM

Sydney's younger brother, Liam, was one of the series' most entertaining characters. His maturity and witty comments aimed toward his older sister provided comedic relief when things got tense between her and her mother Maggie. Though we got a glimpse of Liam's relationship with his late father — through Sydney mentioning how the two would often build puzzles together — we couldn't help but wonder how Liam was handling his father's death. Another season could have provided us with more of Liam's feelings towards his late father.

THE ULTIMATE LOVE TRIANGLE

Sydney found herself in a tight place with her friends Stanley and Dina, both of whom she shared brief intimate moments with in the second and third episodes. Dina was Syd's best friend, while Stanley was her next-door neighbor (with an intense crush on her). In the season finale, Dina admitted to Sydney that she "didn't not like" their Episode 3 kiss. Poor Stanley, though, wound up being friend-zoned by Sydney. Wouldn't it have been nice to see how things would've played out among this trio?

STANLEY’S FAMILY

Though we met Stanley's father, who expressed great disappointment in him, it's unknown where or who the rest of his family is. However, in a brief conversation between Stanley and Syd in the second episode, Stanley said the men in his family have the reputation of being quite ruthless and how it's his job to change that. These juicy details left us thirsty for more. For example, we could've gotten more information about Stanley's mother. Did she leave Stanley's father? And how about an explanation for why Stanley's father disliked him — he was so lovable!

SYDNEY'S MASTERING HER POWERS

From the moment Sydney made Brad's nose bleed in Episode 1, her powers had us intrigued. Throughout the season, we saw Novak learn more about her abilities with the help of Stanley and through a brief story about how her father once shared her abilities. However, it felt like she barely scratched the surface of her amazing gift, and we missed out on a proper training arc in the second season. Most importantly, we want to know if she always had powers? Or did she gain them because of the large amount of stress she was under?

CLEANING UP THE MESS

The season finale was filled with surprises. When we thought things were OK in Syd's life, Brad entered the gymnasium and revealed her deepest, darkest secrets in front of everyone. Though Brad was indeed a troublesome character, his head-exploding death by Novak's powers was still a horrifying thing to see. But the most shocking moment was the final scene when Sydney — covered in blood — ran to the top of an abandoned tower in the woods and was faced with a mysterious man who said, "Let's begin." Just these last few scenes left us with so many questions. Would Novak be held responsible for Brad's death? Who is this man? How does he know Novak? With all of these lingering queries, wouldn't it have been nice to have a Season 2 that answered them?
