Shrinking Season 3: Everything We Know So Far
Jimmy has grieved and he has forgiven, but what's going to happen when he tries to move on?
That's what we'll soon find out once Shrinking (which was renewed for Season 3 in October) returns to Apple TV+. And if you're anything like us, you're already hankering for some news.
For the uninitiated: Shrinking follows Jimmy (Jason Segel), a grieving therapist who starts to break the rules and tell his clients exactly what he thinks. Ignoring his training and ethics, he finds himself making huge, tumultuous changes to people's lives, including his own, all while trying to repair his relationship with his teenage daughter, Alice (Lukita Maxwell). Harrison Ford plays Jimmy's senior therapist colleague Paul.
The cast also includes Jessica Williams (The Daily Show), Christa Miller (Cougar Town), Michael Urie (Ugly Betty), Ted McGinley (Married... With Children) and Luke Tennie (Players). Brett Goldstein joined the cast in Season 2 as Louis, the drunk driver who killed Jimmy's wife.
While we wait for the therapists to resume their sessions, scroll down to review everything we know so far about Season 3 of the hit dramedy.
Who Is New to the Cast of Shrinking Season 3?
Shrinking has added some highly impressive names to its Season 3 roster, including Michael J. Fox. His guest arc marks a reunion with creator Bill Lawrence (the two worked together on Spin City) and the actor's return to TV after five years. The role will be connected to Ford's character, Paul, who has been dealing with his Parkinson's diagnosis since Season 1 — a disease that Fox has been battling for well over three decades — and one thing's for certain: Fox is not playing himself.
"He is playing someone who is 100% not him — both in how he reacts to it, and how he deals with it," the Lawrence told TVLine's Ryan Schwartz. "But he can still play his character's truth better than anyone else could."
Emmy Award winner Jeff Daniels is also joining the season as Jimmy's dad. Teased Lawrence: "If you're telling a story about found family, and a dude [like Jimmy] has another guy in his life as a father figure, then it's interesting to explore what's lacking on the real side for him."
And at the Bill Lawrence & Friends panel at ATX TV Festival moderated by Schwartz, the creator let slip that Murphy Brown's Candice Bergen will also appear in Season 3. "I didn't expect to have career highlights at this point in my career, and I was on set about 10 days ago watching Harrison Ford, Mike Fox and Candice Bergen — oops, spoiler! — acting together," he said. "For me, that was my childhood."
Details surrounding Bergen's role remain under wraps.
The show is also adding a potential love interest for Luke Tennie's Sean (played by One Day at a Time's Isabella Gomez).
Who Is Returning for Shrinking Season 3?
All of the series' main cast will be back, including Segel, Maxwell, Ford, Williams, Miller, Urie, McGinley and Tennie. Wendie Malick is also a safe bet.
Plus, Lawrence confirmed that Goldstein's Louis will be back for Season 3.
"Forgiveness wasn't just Jimmy's story," the EP told Schwartz. "It was Alice's story, and Derek and Liz's story, and Sean with his dad, and Gabby and her mom and sister, so this sense of moving forward exists for everybody, and we consider Brett's character to be a major one after the second year."
As for Cobie Smulders (who plays Sofi, a woman Jimmy bought a car from toward the end of Season 2), the cast confirmed the How I Met Your Mother vet's return at an Apple TV+ FYC panel held May 17 in Los Angeles. (You can hear Miller speaking about working with Smulders at the very top of this video.) The Shrinking boss also promised that we'll see a lot more of Sofi, who will serve as a potential love interest for Jimmy in the upcoming run, to see "whether or not [Jimmy] can find a way to even imagine himself being happy again."
What Is Shrinking Season 3 About?
Season 3 will examine what moving on looks like for the gang, Lawrence told TVLine — whether they're welcoming a new baby into their home (Brian and Charlie), bracing oneself for a worsening condition (Paul) or trying to grow up without the presence of a parent (Alice).
