Super Bowl: Best & Worst Commercials

One needn't know the difference between a touchdown and a turnover to find enjoyment in the Super Bowl. For many viewers (and we suspect many a TVLine reader), it's all about the ads.

Each year, advertisers pony up big bucks to wave their wares in front of upwards of 100 million lookie-loos... even though most commercials are released online, ahead of the Big Game. So, who drafted famous faces to shill? Who played it for laughs? And who went for waterworks?

Below, you'll find the stars of Community (Joel McHale and Ken Jeong), Curb Your Enthusiasm (Larry David), Euphoria (Zendaya), the upcoming Obi-Wan (Ewan McGregor), Pam & Tommy (Seth Rogen), Saturday Night Live (Pete Davidson and Colin Jost), Schitt's Creek (Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara), Scrubs (Zach Braff and Donald Faison), The Sopranos (Jamie-Lynn Sigler and Robert Iler), Succession (Nicholas Braun), Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis and Hannah Waddingham) and The White Lotus (Jennifer Coolidge).

Among film folk, you have Jim Carrey reviving The Cable Guy, and Mike Myers and Rob Lowe reprising their sinister Austin Powers personas. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is also well represented, with more than a half-dozen stars — including Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy), Idris Elba (Thor), Danai Gurira (Black Panther), Salma Hayek (Eternals), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Brie Larson (Captain Marvel) and Paul Rudd (Ant-Man) — enlisted as pitchmen.

Also on hand are Grammy winners André "3000" Benjamin, Kenny G, Lizzo and Dolly Parton — the latter of whom teams with goddaughter Miley Cyrus.

(TVLine is also rounding up all the big movie trailers during the Big Game — including Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Jurassic World: Dominion — which you can view here.)

Keep scrolling for our take on 30 of the best and worst Game Day ads — which we've playfully categorized as Touchdowns and Fumbles — then hit the comments and share your own reviews.

Touchdown: Amazon

Real-life marrieds Colin Jost and Scarlett Johansson dream up a reality wherein Alexa can read your mind. Initially more endearing than it is funny, the laughs really pick up about halfway through when the virtual assistant begins to reveal more than husband and wife would like.

Touchdown: AT&T

Two Mrs. Kutchers are better than one! The telephone conglomerate's 60-second spot casts Demi Moore (who was married to Ashton Kutcher from 2005-2013) and Mila Kunis (who wedded Kutcher in 2015) as graduates of the same alma mater.

Touchdown: BMW

Arnold Schwarzenegger has already played Hercules. This time around, he's cast as Zeus, king of the gods of Mount Olympus, while Salma Hayek embodies goddess of marriage Hera.

Touchdown: Bud Light Seltzer Hard Soda

Cult of personality reigns supreme as a trio of partygoers journey to the Land of Loud Flavors to share Bud Light Seltzer's new hard soda with the Mayor of Flavortown himself, Guy Fieri.

Touchdown: Busch Beer

Cracking open a refreshing Busch Light awakens the Busch Mountains... as well as jazz saxophonist Kenny G, whose dulcet tones are as smooth as ever.

Touchdown: Chevrolet

Sopranos reunion alert! Series creator David Chase directs Jamie-Lynn Sigler (Meadow) and TV brother Robert Iler (A.J.) in this recreation of the HBO drama's iconic opening sequence.

Touchdown: Frito-Lay

Upon getting a taste of Frito-Lay's Flamin' Hot selection of snacks, forest creatures are compelled to sing along to a Salt-N-Pepa classic. (We still prefer Jeffster's rendition, but this one's cute, too.)

Touchdown: FTX

Leave it to everyone's favorite curmudgeon — Curb Your Enthusiasm star Larry David — to make us forget we're watching a commercial for cryptocurrency.

Touchdown: General Motors

Austin Powers reunion alert! Doctor Evil goes electric in this quasi-sequel featuring Mike Myers (as the criminal mastermind), Rob Lowe (as Doctor Evil's No. 2), Seth Green (as Scott Evil) and Mindy Sterling (as Frau Farbissina).

Touchdown: Google Pixel 6

Lizzo's transcendent vocals swell in this ad highlighting the Pixel 6's "Real Tone" technology, which better captures darker skin tones in photographs.

Touchdown: Hellmann's

Legendary linebacker Jerod Mayo is determined to "make taste, not waste," and tackles anyone who dares to throw perfectly good food in the trash. Stay till the end for a cameo by the "very hittable" Pete Davidson.

Touchdown: Kia America

We wouldn't typically describe a robot as precious, but have you seen Robo Dog's big blue eyes? The animatronic canine finds his forever home (and gets a much-needed charge) in this ad for Kia's all new, all electric vehicle.

Touchdown: Nissan USA

Schitt's Creek reunion alert! Nissan thrills transform Eugene Levy into a fast and furious driver with flowing locks not unlike Fabio. Brie Larson, Danai Gurira and Dave Bautista also make appearances, as does Levy's former costar Catherine O'Hara.

Touchdown: Planet Fitness

Onetime paparazzi magnet Lindsay Lohan is #FeelingFitacular as she attempts to put the past behind her. Be on the lookout for cameos by Jeopardy! all-star Buzzy Cohen, Dennis Rodman, Danny Trejo and William Shatner.

Touchdown: Rakuten

It's a testament to Hannah Waddingham's glorious turn as a sinister high roller that we loved this commercial as much as we did, despite having little-to-no idea what was being advertised. (Side note: Someone please cast Waddingham as the villainess in a Disney musical.)

Touchdown: Salesforce

We appreciate the messaging, not to mention the shade cast at Mark Zuckerberg's dystopian fuel known in some circles as the Metaverse. Factor in pitchman Matthew McConaughey, and you've got yourself a solid ad.

Touchdown: Squarespace

Euphoria and Spider-Man: No Way Home star Zendaya is cast as the living embodiment of an age-old tongue twister. Narrated by OutKast's André 3000, this beautifully directed commercial charts Sally's ascent from struggling enterpriser to seaside sensation.

Touchdown: T-Mobile

The guy love is strong when Zach Braff and Donald Faison team up to sing about their home internet service (to the tune of West Side Story's "I Feel Pretty.")

Touchdown: Toyota

The car manufacturer's annual ad — starring Tommy Lee Jones, Leslie Jones, Rashida Jones and a very special guest — proves that keeping up with the Joneses (or is it Jonases now?) is easier said than done.

Touchdown: Uber Eats

Daily Show host Trevor Noah, Succession's Nicholas Braun (aka Cousin Greg) and White Lotus' Jennifer Coolidge get their Uber Eats and Uber Don't Eats mixed up in this hilarious ad for the delivery app. But the MVP here is goop founder Gwyneth Paltrow, who makes herself — and her lifestyle company's product line — the butt of the joke.

Touchdown: Verizon

Jim Carrey doesn't miss a beat as he reprises his role as deranged basic cable installer Ernie "Chip" Douglas from the 1996 black comedy The Cable Guy.

Fumble: Avocados From Mexico

Citizens of Ancient Rome attend a tailgate party in this lackluster Game Day ad, which features a last-minute cameo by Andy Richter as salad-loving statesman Julius Caesar.

Fumble: Booking.com

Unlike pitchman Idris Elba, the online travel agency has never been accused of being "flashy, sexy or lit." But it would've helped the website make more of an impression had the ad itself been a bit flashier.

Fumble: Carvana

We had just about enough of this Oversharing Mom about a third of the way through the ad.

Fumble: Expedia

Look, we're as excited as anyone about Ewan McGregor's return to the Star Wars universe by way of Disney+'s Obi-Wan, and we were equally happy to see him here. But the messaging — the notion that we should value experiences more than fancy possessions — rings a bit hollow amid a sea of commercials shilling big-ticket items.

Fumble: Lay's

Seth Rogen and Paul Rudd should've phoned good friend Judd Apatow to do a page-one rewrite. The ad peaks with their 1997 road trip, as they sing along to the Shania Twain classic "You're Still the One."

Fumble: Planters

Greendale grads Joel McHale and Ken Jeong can't agree whether mixed nuts are meant to be eaten all together or one at a time in this whimsical but unexceptional ad.

Fumble: Sam's Club

We'll admit, we laughed when Kevin Hart's stunt double picked up his own stunt double to reach a bag of chips. But that had little to do with Hart, whose incessant rambling about being a VIP member grew increasingly irksome.

Fumble: T-Mobile

We mean no disrespect to country music legend Dolly Parton or her goddaughter/legend-in-the-making Miley Cyrus, but this parody of "We Are the World" is just lame. There's no other way to put it. T-Mobile did Dolly dirty.

Fumble: TurboTax

The software company promises to match you with a tax expert that's right for you "no matter who you are and what state you work in," which is great news for New York-living, London-working actor Jason Sudeikis, who's currently in Los Angeles to shoot a Super Bowl commercial. But talk about a missed opportunity, not finding some way to incorporate his Emmy-winning turn as onetime American football coach-turned-UK Premier League coach Ted Lasso. We were delighted to see him, but disappointed in how he was used.
