2022 In Review: The Best (And Worst) Weddings We Witnessed This Year
Pop the Champagne and toss some rice, because it's time to revel in this year's TV weddings — both good and bad.
TVLine's Year in Review continues with a look back at 17 of the small-screen weddings that stuck with us long after the "I do"s were said. And because we love a good ranking, we've placed them in order from worst (think: messy, painful and/or chaotic) to best (think: heartwarming, long-awaited and/or just plain gorgeous).
Here's a little bit of a Spoiler Alert: In at least one of the cases below, the wedding didn't actually happen. As you might guess, that one's close to the back of the ranks. Yet it's not the worst item on our list, which really says something about the events at the back of the pack. What can we say? When your blessed union racks up a body count, it gets penalized accordingly.
Scroll through the following list to see how these dearly beloved TV couples' big days went, then hit the comments to discuss your favorite (and least favorite) nuptials from the past year.
17. Danny & Amber, FOR ALL MANKIND
A wedding on the first-ever space hotel sounds cool, but when the gravity goes on the fritz during the celebration — turns out too much gravity is just as bad as not enough gravity — and all the guests are scrambling for survival, it turns into the wrong kind of memorable. The catastrophe made for an incredibly intense hour of TV, but probably not an anniversary that Danny and Amber are excited to celebrate, given that multiple people died. (Season 3, Episode 1; watch on Apple TV+)
16. Rhaenyra & Laenor, HOUSE OF THE DRAGON
What was supposed to be the celebratory kickoff of a week full of wedding lead-up lost its shine when a) the bride's uncle hit on her on the dance floor, b) a post-dinner melee led to the murder of the groom's lover, and c) the hurried-along ceremony itself — performed after all the guests had been shooed from the room — ended with the collapse of the ailing King Viserys.
15. Craig & Leo / Xander & Gwen, DAYS OF OUR LIVES
When it comes to disastrous ceremonies, does it get any worse than a double wedding in which no one swaps vows, one groom discovers that his fiancé is already married (to drag queen Jackie Cox, no less!), and the blushing bride is taken away in handcuffs? Don't get us wrong, it was wildly entertaining to watch these four lives crumble before our very eyes, but we doubt anyone in Salem will look back on this day with fondness. (Season 57, Episodes 141 and 142; watch on Peacock)
14. Max & Helen, NEW AMSTERDAM
Max wasn't smiling for long on his wedding day, because it doesn't get any worse than being jilted by your bride at the altar. And he found out that Helen wasn't coming over the phone. Ouch! (Season 4, Episode 22; watch on Peacock)
13. Nandor & Marwa, WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS
The undead event of the century started out kind of rough, with vampire Nandor acting like a real groomzilla with unreasonable demands like a live dodo to feed to the wraiths. Then it got even rougher at the ceremony, with nearly every guest objecting to Nandor's union to his ancient bride Marwa. But it really hit rock bottom when Nandor made the mistake of wishing to a genie that Marwa would like everything he likes, turning her into an annoyingly compliant companion. They did get hitched... but Nandor was left wishing he had listened to all those objections. (Season 4, Episode 6; watch on Hulu)
12. Rollins & Carisi, LAW & ORDER: SVU
The lead-up was clunky, the officiant referred to marriage as "the longest arraignment of your life," and all of the guests thought they'd been called to an emergency legal situation instead of their co-workers' blessed union. But hey: At least Rollins and Carisi' looked beamingly happy throughout their impromptu wedding. (Oh, to be a fly on the wall when Mama Carisi hears about the elopement, though.) (Season 24, Episode 9; watch on Peacock)
11. Shaun & Lea, THE GOOD DOCTOR
After an entire season spent on wedding planning, not to mention the almost wedding attended by Antonia Thomas' fan-favorite Dr. Claire Browne, we must admit that we were a bit let down by Shaun and Lea's intimate rooftop ceremony. We also could've done without the whole Dr. Lim-gets-stabbed-during-the-reception cliffhanger. (Season 5, Episode 18; watch on Hulu)
10. Ethan & April, CHICAGO MED
Although it was lovely to see the couple finally get hitched, their nuptials were awfully brief, especially considering how long viewers had waited for the moment. Given that it was Ethan's final episode and the culmination of his romantic arc with April, we were hoping for something a little more memorable. (Season 8, Episode 9; watch on Peacock)
9. Darlene & Ben/ Jackie & Neville, THE CONNERS
Unlike Darlene's first wedding, this one didn't culminate in Dan having a heart attack, so that's a plus! And though we could've done without the feuding clergymen and opera-singing clown (which felt a bit cartoonish for this otherwise grounded sitcom), the joint wedding was a rousing success. Ben's sardonic vows to Darlene were the cherry on top. (Season 4, Episode 20; unavailable to stream)
8. Grace & D'Angelo, ALL AMERICAN
Not even Grace's disastrous bachelorette party could drain the beauty and bliss from her next-day wedding to D'Angelo. After a ceremony kept short and sweet, the couple now known as the Carters threw a joyful, just-dramatic-enough reception, featuring the latest chapter of Spencer and Olivia's breakup journey, a sentimental bouquet toss and an opportunity for Grace to reconcile with her estranged younger sister. (Season 5, Episode 4; watch on CWTV.com)
7. Claire & Isaac, THE ORVILLE
In a beautiful (if simulated) forest setting, the Chief Medical Officer and the Kaylon exchanged vows that were heartfelt (hers), factually accurate (his) and oddly touching in a way that not even Bortus' ill-advised best man's toast could mar. (Season 3, Episode 10; watch on Hulu)
6. Luther & Sloane, THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY
Who says the apocalypse can't be a good time? Despite the universe literally getting swallowed around them, the Umbrella Academy and Sparrow Academy merged into one big, happy-ish family — well, except maybe Allison and Viktor — as Luther and Sloane tied the knot in a sweet, last-minute ceremony. And a surprisingly moving one, at that, given that the newlyweds just met for the first time a few days earlier. (Season 3, Episode 8; watch on Netflix)
5. Jazmin & Spencer, GOOD TROUBLE
The wedding of Gael's sister and her groom Spencer was a joyous celebration of love and acceptance. From the way all the wedding guests stood in support of the couple to Jazmin's dance with her father, with whom she shared a complicated relationship, the significance and the sweetness of every moment wasn't lost on us. (Season 4, Episode 14; watch on Hulu)
4. Abigail & Adil/ Raelle & Scylla, MOTHERLAND: FORT SALEM
This underrated Freeform drama had a ton of plot to cram into its epic (albeit abrupt) final season, and that included a beautiful double wedding between two beloved couples. The fact that Sheryl Lee Ralph officiated the ceremony was merely the icing on the wedding cake. (Season 3, Episode 9; watch on Hulu)
3. Kit & Bell, THE RESIDENT
Chastain Park's resident (heh) power couple got married in a lovely, intimate ceremony made all the sweeter by the professional hurdles Kit and Bell had to jump to reach the altar that day. But once they finally did, the docs exchanged beautifully honest vows... and the romantic reception also gave Conrad/Billie 'shippers everywhere a reason to celebrate. (Season 6, Episode 6; watch on Hulu)
2. Beth & Rip, YELLOWSTONE
After watching a kidnapped priest marry his guardians in a thrown-together ceremony on the front lawn, an awestruck Carter asked if all weddings were like that. "Hell, kid," replied best man Lloyd, "ain't none of 'em like that." Which was exactly what made the unconventional nuptials perfect for the ranch's gruff-but-tender foreman and his combustible bride. (Season 4, Episode 10; watch on Peacock)
1. Stella & Severide, CHICAGO FIRE
So what if their wedding venue suddenly became unavailable at the last minute? Stella and Severide still made the best out of a bad situation with the help of their friend Casey, who found a boat and a ship's captain who could marry the couple. Sailing down the river while exchanging beautiful vows? Upgrade! (Season 10, Episode 22; watch on Peacock)
