TVLine Readers Give Thanks For A New Haunting, Ted Lasso's Charm, Canadian Imports, Lovecraft Scares And More
Thanksgiving might look a bit different this year, but our collective gratitude for good TV remains the same.
On Wednesday, Team TVLine shared its appreciation for the small-screen highlights of this very odd year — and now, it's your turn. We've gathered your submissions from the past two weeks, and below, you'll find 20 shout-outs to 2020 television, from Lovecraft Country's edge-of-your-seat scares to Ted Lasso's heartwarming comedy.
And though the coronavirus pandemic isn't yet behind us, it seems TVLine readers have found plenty of shows to give them comfort in quarantine — even series that aren't on the air anymore, like White Collar and a bevy of classic sitcoms.
Elsewhere, readers gave thanks for renewals that were pleasant surprises (Good Girls, Lucifer), The West Wing's HBO Max reunion, two short-lived Netflix gems, a satisfying end to Supernatural's 15-year run and more. (Note: Submissions have been edited for content and clarity.)
Scroll through the list below to see all 20 submissions we've singled out, then drop a comment with the 2020 television for which you are most grateful. Happy Thanksgiving, TVLiners!
MEGHAN SAYS...
"I am thankful for the Seasons 5 and 6 renewals of Lucifer. The first half of Season 5 was good, but even better when you think about when it came out and the fact that it was one of very few scripted shows to have new episodes mid-pandemic... Here's to hoping the second half of Season 5 is coming soon!"
DAN SAYS...
"I'm thankful for Teenage Bounty Hunters and I Am Not Okay With This, even though Netflix cancelled them both after only one season."
ALYSON SAYS...
"Thankful for the HBO Max West Wing special... for sharing important information about voting and for reminding us why it's still one of the best shows ever — made even better with the impeccable casting of Sterling K. Brown as Leo McGarry."
TERI SAYS...
"I'm thankful for Canadian TV. Because Hollywood wasn't able to film as much or as soon, some networks brought in Canadian programming that was already in the can. Several series I've wanted to see are now airing here in the U.S.! Here's hoping more will show up!"
'THE LADY IN THE LAKE' SAYS...
"It feels funny to say I'm thankful for such a sad g̶h̶o̶s̶t̶ love story, but The Haunting of Bly Manor was a beautiful gift in these strange days. The two-year wait for the show did not disappoint, though I would be thankful if we didn't have to wait two more for the next chapter in this series! Thank you to the writers for crafting this heartbreaking tale and to every. Single. Actor. for bringing it to life. The rest is just..."
JEFF SAYS...
"I'm incredibly thankful for classic sitcoms this year! In a time when everything was (and still is) uncertain, there's a comfortable familiarity about watching 25 minutes of classic characters from a bygone time. This year alone I've binged Bewitched, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Taxi, and watched countless episodes of classics like Gilligan's Island, All in the Family, The Munsters and The Flintstones! These series help me escape briefly and somehow make living in 2020 just a little easier!"
SUSAN SAYS...
"I'm super grateful for The CW's Nancy Drew. It may have been the last thing that I cleared off my DVR during the lockdown back in the spring, but it ended up being the show that has left the best impression... I absolutely loved the well-executed twist of Nancy's parentage, all the genuine scares, the Drew Crew's dynamic, Ace's one-liners, George's loving sarcasm, and of course the developing relationship between Nancy and Ace. I cannot wait for Season 2!"
ERIC SAYS...
"Although it was, at times, frustrating and boring, I'm thankful that CBS was able to pull off an All-Stars season of Big Brother in this pandemic year."
MIKE SAYS...
"I am thankful for Ted Lasso and the fact that it has already been renewed for two more seasons (at least). Little did I know when I first saw the trailer for the Apple TV+ show that it would bring me the joy that 2020 had been missing."
DREW SAYS...
"I'm thankful that my all-time favorite TV couple, Link and Amelia on Grey's Anatomy, weathered 2020 and are happily starting an adorable little family."
ANNMARIE SAYS...
"That Schitt's Creek got all of its well-deserved Emmy love, especially the TV royalty that is Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara... Anyone who loves Schitt's has to check out SCTV."
GABBY SAYS...
"That Hallmark still managed to do a Countdown to Christmas slot, film new episodes of When Calls the Heart and grow in diverse storylines all while in the midst of a pandemic!"
JEFFREY SAYS...
"The greatest crossover in the Arrowverse with Crisis on Infinite Earths [which culminated in January on Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow] — not only did all the shows cross over, but [it had] all the references to the greater DC universe! It was a blast to see!"
CHRISTOPHER SAYS...
"I'm thankful for shows that ended in 2020 the right way. Between The Good Place, Schitt's Creek and She-Ra, I'm happy that more showrunners are ending their series on their own terms, and giving us satisfying finales in the process! (Even if I selfishly wish they could go on forever!)"
NICOLE SAYS...
"I am thankful for Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist! I'm actually rewatching as I type this. For a story about a dying father and workplace drama, it brings so much joy. The cast is so very talented! #TeamMax"
DEMETRIA SAYS...
"I'm very thankful for the Season 4 renewal of one of my favorite shows of all time — Good Girls. It's definitely an underrated gem... I'm grateful for the show because it's helped me a lot this year. I'm thankful my Good Girls aren't going anywhere and they'll be back next year!"
MERISSA SAYS...
"Lovecraft Country. That show combined the best of sci-fi, horror and real-life racist depictions, and managed to do that flawlessly."
LUCY SAYS...
"I'm thankful for Prodigal Son. I have a new fandom! And it helped me deal with the end of three of my all-time favorite shows: Criminal Minds, Hawaii Five-0 and Supernatural."
KYLE SAYS...
"Quarantine and Hulu for giving me the chance to discover White Collar. How did I miss it a decade ago? And when is USA going to revive it? Matt Bomer and Jeff Eastin want to do it, so get it together, USA!"
NANCY SAYS...
"Thankful for Supernatural's final season and for giving the Winchesters what they have always deserved: peace."
