2021 In Review: The Scenes We Desperately Wish We Could Unsee

'Tis the season to make special holiday wishes, and we know exactly what we're hoping for this year: to forget that any of these things ever happened.

From men birthing alien babies on American Horror Story to that infamous White Lotus defecation scene, we once again found ourselves watching some of our favorite shows through the spaces between our fingers. And because it would be simply rude of us to suffer alone, we're inviting you to join us in reliving 27 of 2021's most unsettling TV moments.

A few quick reminders before you scroll down (if you dare) — not only are some of these images pretty graphic, but some of them contain significant spoilers. So you might want to come back later if you're at all behind on any of the following shows: 9-1-1, 9-1-1: Lone Star, American Horror Story, The Bachelorette, Black Monday, Bless the Harts, BMF, Chicago Fire, Cowboy Bebop, Dancing With the Stars, Dave, Disenchantment, Doom Patrol, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Lisey's Story, New Amsterdam, Nine Perfect Strangers, Physical, The Real Housewives of New York City, Servant, The Stand, The Underground Railroad, Vanderpump Rules, The Walking Dead, WandaVision, The White Lotus or YOU.

Still with us? How brave you are. As a reward, you may scroll down to experience 27 of the year's most disturbing moments. When you're done, drop a comment with your own additions to this list. Which 2021 TV moments do you wish you could unsee?

9-1-1

We could probably devote an entire end-of-year list solely to Moments From the 9-1-1's That Made Our Stomachs Turn — but we have bravely narrowed our picks down to the parasitic worms being tugged out of this goat yoga instructor's eyeball (Season 4, Episode 3)....

9-1-1: LONE STAR

...and this scene from Lone Star's second season, during which an unsuspecting partygoer had an entire layer of his arm ripped off with a single tug. (Season 2, Episode 2)

AMERICAN HORROR STORY: DOUBLE FEATURE

Don't be fooled by this child's Baby Groot-ish appearance — it was just cut out of a pregnant man (played by a very game Nico Greetham), and its first act upon birth is to immediately kill its host. The only thing grosser than the latter is the former. (Season 10, Episode 9)

THE BACHELORETTE

Just when we thought we'd seen the last of contestant Rick Leach's head on a silver platter during Michelle Young's season, the Men Tell All episode delivered fresh-baked hell upon recreating Rick's memorable entrance with this creepy cake. Even more unsettling? The sight of the real Rick taking a bite out of his own sugary skull. (Season 18, Episode 8)

BLACK MONDAY

We never expected this show to turn into a murder mystery, but as the body count grew higher, the deaths became grosser and gorier. Exhibit A: Larry Lehman's bloody and decapitated head (and thankfully not pictured here, his dismembered penis). (Season 3, Episode 8)

BLESS THE HARTS

When it comes to this fishing trip gone wrong, the look on Wayne's face sums up our reaction perfectly: Nope, nope and nope! (Season 2, Episode 10)

BMF

Fans of BMF knew Lamar (Eric Kofi-Abrefa) would exact his revenge the minute Meech kidnapped Zoe. But no one thought Meech and Terry's preteen sister Nicole and her boyfriend Darius would become targets — or that Lamar was capable of stabbing and killing poor Darius. (Season 1 Episode 6)

CHICAGO FIRE

Trigger alert for people with coulrophobia! The NBC drama served us an unexpectedly disturbing image when a group of clowns showed up at a graveyard dedicated to circus performers. Amusing or nightmare fuel? You be the judge! (Season 9, Episode 7)

COWBOY BEBOP

Netflix's bullet-riddled anime adaptation was heavy on blood and gore, but the most upsetting visual came when a band of eco-terrorists unleashed a poison gas that literally turns people into trees, with branches and roots ripping apart their flesh from the inside. Forget saving the trees: We're all for chopping down the rainforest after seeing that. (Season 1, Episode 4)

DANCING WITH THE STARS

The ABC competition series historically goes all out with its Disney Night hair and makeup... but we sorta wish it had shown some restraint with Mike "The Miz" Mizanin's transformation into Aladdin's Genie. The blue body paint is one thing, but that bald cap with a tuft of black hair on top is nothing short of nightmare fuel. (Season 30, Episode 4)

DAVE

We knew that Dave would encounter his own ego at some point during Episode 9, as he took a trippy journey through his own brain in order to get past his writer's block once and for all. We did not anticipate, however, that Dave's ego would be a completely hairless version of himself, clothed in nothing but a diaper that left little to the imagination. (Season 2, Episode 9)

DISENCHANTMENT

Not to belittle another culture's delicacies, but couldn't Queen Dagmar have at least killed that poor trog before eating its brain with a spoon? (Part 3, Episode 1)

DOOM PATROL

What's the only thing worse than getting attacked by a ravenous were-butt? Try an entire army of 'em! Honestly, we're not sure which disturbed us more about this bootylicious battle — the visuals or the sound effects. (Season 3, Episode 4)

I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER

Just be glad we're giving you a blurry before shot of this one — as in, before Johnny's fiancé got his face smashed in by a 50-pound weight. (Season 1, Episode 2)

LISEY'S STORY

When stalker Jim Dooley made good on his multiple threats to Lisey, it was not a pretty sight. He suffocated her with a plastic bag, headbutted her to the floor and delivered a dozen blows directly to her face. And that wasn't even the worst of it. He then tortured her with a pizza cutter slice by excruciating slice, and watching it all go down was sheer nightmare fuel. (Season 1, Episode 4)

NEW AMSTERDAM

We know it's an actual medical procedure, but we really could have done without seeing the maggots eating the dead tissue from a patient's wounds. (We also wish we hadn't been eating ourselves during the episode.) (Season 4, Episode 9)

NINE PERFECT STRANGERS

Jessica's first experience with magic mushrooms was a horrifying one, as she hallucinated her own nose falling off her face after attempting to pop a zit in the mirror. Fortunately, Samara Weaving's comedic timing in this scene — particularly when a freaked-out Jessica asked husband Ben if he had stolen her nose — saved the moment from becoming too nauseating. (Season 1, Episode 6)

PHYSICAL

Season 1 of the Apple TV+ series built to a really weird climax when Sheila — reeling from husband Danny's election loss and what it means for her future — escaped to the closed mall, where she spied John Breem running laps up and down the escalators. The two locked eyes, a sweaty John tugged off his shirt and loosened his belt, and... let's just say they got physical, without ever touching... one another. (Season 1, Episode 10)

THE REAL HOUSEWIVES OF NEW YORK CITY

We'll do you a solid (pun intended) and avoid showing you what Ramona Singer accidentally dropped on the floor of her hotel bathroom. Just know that she tried to pass it off as spilt makeup — and no one believed her for a second. (Season 13, Episode 10)

SERVANT

Leanne's curse on Sean led to some unfortunate side effects, like those inexplicable splinters and his sudden loss of taste. But when he ultimately lost feeling in his hand, he tested it out by holding his appendage over a scalding stove-top flame. The burning, bubbling and oozing that occurred after will be forever seared into our brains. (Season 2, Episode 1)

THE STAND

After Nadine died by suicide, falling many stories to her demise at Randall Flagg's New Vegas hotel, we didn't even want to imagine the grisly damage that'd been done to her body and face upon hitting the ground. And yet, Paramount+ showed it to us anyway, quite literally serving up Nadine's horribly cracked cranium on a platter. We're gagging at the memory alone. (Season 1, Episode 8)

THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD

The character Big Anthony (Elijah Everett) suffered a more painful and prolonged punishment in Colson Whitehead's gripping novel of the same name. Tragically, his death sentence for attempting to run away concluded in the same horrific fashion in both versions and he was whipped and burned alive. (Season 1 Episode 1)

VANDERPUMP RULES

Lala's colorful description of her daughter's birth ("My kid basically slipped out of the cookie") would have been enough. Did we really need to see the action go down, let alone with such minimal pixelation? (Season 9, Episode 1)

THE WALKING DEAD

We've seen so many grody zombies' faces over the years that you'd think a mere human's couldn't faze us. But fazed we were — and mildly traumatized — by the sight of Frost's countenance contorted in agony as Daryl cut off his finger as part of the doomed man's "questioning" by the Reapers. (Season 11, Episode 6)

WANDAVISION

As delightful as WandaVision's sitcom homages often were, our blood ran cold as we took in this fake commercial from Episode 6, in which a starving boy finally gets his hands on a yogurt snack while stranded on an island, only to wither away and die when he can't peel the lid off the container. Paired with the colorful, upbeat animation of so many early-aughts snack ads, this Yo-Magic commercial was among WandaVision's most unexpectedly chilling sequences. (Season 1, Episode 6)

THE WHITE LOTUS

Yes, Shane was an incredibly obnoxious guest, but hotel manager Armond took it about ten steps too far when he exacted revenge on him by, um, defecating in the guy's suitcase. Armond did end up getting stabbed... and we kind of want to stab our eyes out so we don't have to see anything like that again. (Season 1, Episode 6)

YOU

While on some level we respect Joe Goldberg's commitment to his various cover-ups, there's absolutely no level on which we enjoyed watching him cut off his own toes in the Netflix drama's fiery finale. (Season 3, Episode 10)
