Dexter: Original Sin Creator Says Prequel's Un-Renewal 'Wasn't Handled Well,' Offfers Update On Trinity Spinoff
If you were super bummed when Paramount+ with Showtime reversed Dexter: Original Sin's renewal, imagine how series creator Clyde Phillips felt. Actually, you don't have to imagine: On a recent podcast, the show boss plainly said he was "not happy about it."
"It was a tough phone call that I got that night. They had already picked up the show, and I'd informed all the writers and informed all the actors, and then they un-picked it up," he said on the most recent episode of the Dissecting Dexter podcast. "It wasn't handled well, and I'm not happy about it."
The prequel was renewed in April, but the it had been on hiatus with no set return-to-production plan. The series originally bowed December 13, 2024, with its finale hitting Paramount+ Premium February 14. (Read our finale post mortem here.)
Per Phillips, Paramount executives originally wanted to create an extended Dexterverse of shows that would air on CBS and Paramount+. These spinoffs included one centered on John Lithgow's Trinity Killer — and that he and a writers' room completed 10 scripts of that potential series — but that Paramount Global's recent merger with Skydance Media has changed the company's plans.
TVLine has reached out to Paramount for comment.
For what it's worth, Phillips added that he'd be "delighted" if Paramount went through with the Trinity spinoff, "but I don't see them doing it."
