Kelsey Grammer Rules Out A Return To Cheers On Frasier: 'We Don't Want To Desecrate A National Monument'
Are you waiting to see Frasier Crane make a triumphant return to his old bar Cheers in the Frasier revival? You might as well be waiting to catch a glimpse of Norm's wife Vera.
Paramount+'s revival finds Kelsey Grammer's title character moving back to Boston, where he spent a decade sitting on barstools on the hit NBC sitcom Cheers. But in a new interview with our sister site Variety, Grammer pours cold water on the idea of Frasier checking in on the Cheers gang.
"I don't think we should do that," he says. "We don't want to desecrate a national monument. I'm not sure how we can have it live up to anything but a desecration." He adds that the decision not to go back is a testament to how highly they regard the original Cheers series: "I think we honor it by excluding it."

In the revival, Frasier and his pals now drink at a Boston bar called Mahoney's, named in honor of John Mahoney, Grammer's co-star on the original Frasier who passed away in 2018. Grammer is joined by an entirely new cast, including Jack Cutmore-Scott as his son Freddy. Cheers and Frasier director James Burrows returned to helm the revival's first two episodes, though, and Bebe Neuwirth reprised her role as Frasier's ex-wife Lilith in last week's episode. Frasier veteran Peri Gilpin is also slated to return as Frasier's radio producer Roz in an upcoming Season 1 episode.
The revival's executive producer Joe Cristalli previously told TVLine that Frasier won't return to Cheers in the first season because "he's got some unresolved issues somewhere that hopefully we'll get to explore." But fellow EP Chris Harris left the door open for a visit in future seasons: "Hopefully, he will, and we can't wait for him to do that... As a fan, I can't wait to see the next part of that story."
