Game Of Thrones' Jon Snow Spinoff Shelved For Now, Kit Harington Says: 'We Couldn't Find The Right Story'

Jon Snow won't be coming back to life (again) anytime soon: Game of Thrones alum Kit Harington says HBO's planned spinoff centered on Jon Snow is no longer in active development.

"In development, you look at every angle, and you see whether it's worth it. And currently, it's not," Harington told ScreenRant while doing press for his movie Blood for Dust. "Currently, it's off the table, because we all couldn't find the right story to tell that we were all excited about enough. So we decided to lay down tools with it for the time being. There may be a time in the future where we return to it, but at the moment, no. It's firmly on the shelf." (HBO had no comment when reached by TVLine.)

The proposed sequel series, which would see Harington reprise his Thrones role as Jon Snow, was first reported to be in the works in June 2022. Thrones book author George R.R. Martin confirmed the news later that month, saying that Harington was actually the one "who brought the idea to us." But HBO boss Casey Bloys poured cold water on the project last November, saying that aside from HBO's officially announced Thrones spinoffs, there isn't "anything else in that world that is close to a green light or anything."

Fans of all things Westeros will still have plenty of new material to enjoy, though: The Thrones prequel House of the Dragon returns to HBO for Season 2 on Sunday, June 16 at 9/8c, and a new spinoff following popular book characters Dunk and Egg — A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight — has snagged an official green light, with a premiere slated for late 2025.
