Gilmore Girls Boss Revisits A Year In The Life Cliffhanger: The Identity Of Rory's Baby Daddy 'Stays In My Mind'
Now that spooky season has officially begun, it's time to revisit a Stars Hollow mystery that continues to haunt us.
In honor of Gilmore Girls' 25th anniversary, series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the show's enduring legacy. Among the most notable topics of conversation: Netflix's 2016 revival Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, which ended its four-part run on a cliffhanger.
In its final moments, viewers learned Rory was pregnant, but the identity of the father was never explicitly shared. Based on the events of the episodes, the father could have believably been Logan, Jess, new boyfriend Paul, or some random Wookie cosplayer. So why end such a heartwarming series on such a mysterious note?
"The cliffhanger was intentional because the story was about history repeating itself and about mothers and daughters," Sherman-Palladino said. "It really to me was much less about who the boy was, but more about what the circumstance was."
Much to the frustration of sleuthing fans, Sherman-Palladino has continued to defend the miniseries' ending, saying her concern wasn't with the goings on of any of the aforementioned men.
"My thing was: Always focus on what the girls are doing, and what's the story between the mother and the daughter because that's what the show is," she shared. "We have wonderful boys and all the romances were wonderful. I know people are very invested in them, and all the boys are extremely handsome and delightful to stare at, but honestly, the show is about the girls. If neither one of them had a boyfriend in six years, it still would have been fine."
Over the years, even the show's cast members have expressed surprise at the cliffhanger. In 2017, Alexis Bledel admitted "it certainly wasn't the ending I expected."
"I had told Amy that I hoped Rory would end on a high note after all of her hard work," she added. "I wanted to see her succeed and be thriving. So it was a hard thing for me to digest."
Lauren Graham meanwhile, said, "It took me a minute, but, ultimately I loved it."
In 2023, the baby daddy mystery was seemingly solved by Gilmore Girls costume supervisor Valeria Campbell. In a series of TikTok videos, Campbell called Logan "the only obvious choice." She went on to allege that Sherman-Palladino "herself said 'Why are people even questioning who the father is?' It's because it was supposed to be very, very, very, very obvious."
But will we ever find out the truth straight from the source?
"In my mind, I know who the father was and I know what the baby was, but that stays in my mind," Sherman-Palladino said.
