Gina Carano, Disney Reach Settlement In Her Lawsuit Over The Mandalorian Firing

The long legal dispute over Gina Carano's controversial exit from The Mandalorian is over.

Disney and Lucasfilm have reached a settlement with Carano, who sued the producers of Disney+'s Star Wars series following her February 2021 firing, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Details of the settlement were not disclosed.

Lucasfilm said in a statement: "We have reached an agreement with Gina Carano to resolve the issues in her pending lawsuit against the companies. Ms. Carano was always well respected by her directors, co-stars, and staff, and she worked hard to perfect her craft while treating her colleagues with kindness and respect. With this lawsuit concluded, we look forward to identifying opportunities to work together with Ms. Carano in the near future."

Carano added her own statement, which read in part: "I have come to an agreement with Disney/Lucasfilm which I believe is the best outcome for all parties involved. I hope this brings some healing to the Force... I am excited to flip the page and move onto the next chapter. My desires remain in the arts, which is where I hope you will join me."

Carano played Rebel shock trooper-turned-New Republic marshal Cara Dune on The Mandalorian's first two seasons, and she was even reportedly poised to star in her own spinoff. But she was fired prior to Season 3 for a series of social media posts that some characterized as anti-trans, racist, anti-vaxx and antisemitic, with critics starting a #FireGinaCarano hashtag campaign. A Lucasfilm representative said at the time that Carano's "social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable."

Carano fired back, suing Disney and Lucasfilm in February 2024 and claiming wrongful termination for exercising her right to free speech. She also alleged in the suit that Disney and Lucasfilm "took other retaliatory actions to limit and deny her future employment opportunities" and intentionally damaged her reputation.

Carano originally sought to be reinstated to The Mandalorian's cast, but there's no indication that she'll appear again as Cara Dune. (In The Mandalorian's Season 3 premiere, we learned that the New Republic had recruited Cara for its Special Forces team.) Next up for The Mandalorian: a big-screen movie, The Mandalorian & Grogu, set to hit theaters next May.
