Harry Potter: HBO Confirms 2027 Release Date For Series Adaptation — See First Production Photo

Harry Potter fans probably wish they had a Time-Turner right about now.

In announcing the start of production on its upcoming Harry Potter series, HBO also confirmed on Monday that the TV adaptation will premiere sometime in 2027.

Production is taking place at England's Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden; below, you can find series star Dominic McLaughlin commemorating the start of filming, dressed in Harry Potter's Hogwarts garb:

This is the first official confirmation of Harry Potter's release timetable, though HBO chairman and CEO Casey Bloys previously indicated that the show may not debut until 2027.

"When we started the whole thing, we kind of laid out, 'Oh, it could probably be [2027], something like that,'" Bloys told reporters in November 2024. "But don't hold me to any of that, because we're just getting started in the writing and casting process."

Bloys also weighed in on how the show might handle the inevitable growth spurts of its young stars during production hiatuses, a logistical issue that has previously plagued series like Netflix's Stranger Things.

"One of the ideas we talked about was shooting the first season and the second season very close to each other time-wise, because 11 to 13 is a big jump in kids' lives," Bloys said at the time. "You can get away with 13 to 15, something like that. So we're going to have to think about scheduling and shooting so that they don't grow too much between seasons. It is a consideration."

As previously announced, McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton and Alastair Stout will respectively play the main trio of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley in HBO's Harry Potter adaptation, while John Lithgow (as Albus Dumbledore), Janet McTeer (Minerva McGonagall), Paapa Essiedu (Severus Snape) and Nick Frost (Rubeus Hagrid) are among the adult cast members.
