Joe Biden Addresses Nation After Pulling Out Of Presidential Race: 'The Defense Of Democracy Is More Important Than Any Title'
"Nothing, nothing can come in the way of saving our democracy, and that includes personal ambition," President Joe Biden said Wednesday, addressing the United States for the first time since bowing out of the 2024 presidential election.
Biden spoke from the Oval Office in primetime remarks carried by the major broadcast networks and several cable channels. His theme: "The defense of democracy is more important than any title."
"I draw strength, and find joy, in working for the American people. But this sacred task of perfecting our Union is not about me," he said. "It's about you. Your families. Your futures. It's about 'We the People.'"
He later added: "The great thing about America is here, kings and dictators do not rule. The people do. History is in your hands. The power is in your hands. The idea of America lies in your hands. You just have to keep faith, keep the faith."
On July 21, Biden made it clear that he would not seek reelection this November, and instead endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee. The announcement came several weeks after his disastrous debate against former President Donald Trump; Biden's poor performance led to widespread calls for him to withdraw.
