Max Reveals New Password Sharing Fee — Find Out How Much It Costs
Using someone else's Max account? Sorry, your free ride is over.
The streamer has introduced a new "Extra Member Add-On" feature that charges members a fee to allow additional users outside the home, in an effort to crack down on password sharing. The feature, which is available now, costs $7.99 per month for all subscription tiers and allows another user to create a separate profile for use outside the primary subscriber's household. It also allows the new member to transfer an existing profile, bringing their watch lists, history and recommendations with them to their new location.
"Extra Member Add-On and Profile Transfer are two key Max advancements, designed to help viewers with a new way to enjoy our best-in-class content at an exceptional value, and offer subscribers greater flexibility in managing their accounts," Warner Bros Discovery's CEO and President of Global Streaming and Games JB Perrette said in a statement. "These updates provide a simple way for subscribers to add-on a new member to their account, or for existing subscribers who have users outside of their household to smoothly, and in an uninterrupted fashion, transition their profile so that extra member can continue to access Max."
Max joins Netflix and Disney+ among the streamers who have started charging fees to allow additional users outside the primary household. Netflix, which introduced its fee in 2023, currently charges $6.99 per additional user with ads ($8.99 without), while Disney+ charges $6.99 with ads and $9.99 without.
