Oscars To Add Best Stunts Category, Starting With 2028 Ceremony

Stunt performers are finally getting their day in the sun: The Oscars are adding a category for best stunts, starting with the 2028 ceremony.

The new category, technically titled Achievement in Stunt Design, will begin honoring the year's greatest big-screen stunts at the 100th annual Academy Awards for films released in 2027, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (the organization that hands out the Oscars) announced on Thursday. Rules for the category will be announced in 2027. It's unclear at this point if the new category will be featured on the main Oscars telecast; that will be announced at a later date.

"Since the early days of cinema, stunt design has been an integral part of filmmaking," AMPAS CEO Bill Kramer and president Janet Yang said in a statement. "We are proud to honor the innovative work of these technical and creative artists, and we congratulate them for their commitment and dedication in reaching this momentous occasion."

This marks the first new Oscars category since Achievement in Casting was added in 2024; it will be handed out for the first time at next year's ceremony.
