Snowfall Spinoff Receives Pilot Order At FX — Get Details

Coming up on two years since the period crime drama Snowfall wrapped its six-season run, FX has ordered a pilot for a spinoff that's been in development since March 2023.

Snowfall, which debuted in July 2017 and starred Damson Idris, was touted as the story of "how crack began." Over the course of six seasons, the series chronicled how an off-the-books CIA operation contributed to the destruction that rock cocaine leveled upon the vibrant community of 1990s South Central L.A.

The yet-to-be-titled offshoot is described as a continuation of that original story, with franchise vets Gail Bean and Isaiah John set to reprise their roles of Wanda and Leon Simmons.

"Set in 1990s Los Angeles soon after the end of the original series, a recovering addict (played by Bean) strives to take West Coast rap mainstream, despite potential infighting from a harrowing gang war," reads the official synopsis cited by sister site Variety.

Additional casting will get underway soon, with an eye on a summertime shoot date.

Malcolm Spellman (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Bel-Air) will pen the pilot and executive-produce with Snowfall alums Dave Andron, Thomas Schlamme, Julie DeJoie, Michael London and Trevor Engelson.

Bean's previous TV credits include Harlem, P-Valley and Paradise Lost; Johns' include the miniseries When the Streetlights Go On and the TV-movie Downsized.
