Stephen Colbert Takes A Dig At Trump Following Late Show's Emmy Win — Watch

In his first show back since winning the trophy for Outstanding Talk Series during Sunday Emmys ceremony, Late Show host Stephen Colbert took a few seconds during his monologue to, well, rub it in President Donald Trump's face.

"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome one and all. Welcome to The Late Show. I'm your host, Stephen Colbert," he said while opening Tuesday's program. He quickly added: "I'm sorry. I meant to say welcome to the Emmy Award-winning Late Show."

The host then showed off his fancy new golden trophy on screen, as the studio audience got on its feet and chanted his name. After acknowledging "all 200 of the incredibly hardworking people who make this show," and the audience members who attend live tapings and watch from home, he quipped, "Speaking of Emmys, Donald Trump doesn't have one." Trump's former reality show The Apprentice was nominated for Outstanding Reality Competition Program in 2004 and 2005, but lost to CBS' The Amazing Race both times. Those losses prompted the former host to declare that the awards show was rigged, among other pejorative statements he made about the Emmys in the past.

Colbert earned a huge standing ovation during Sunday's ceremony, as he and his team hit the stage to accept the award. The win marked the show's first in the category since Colbert took the Late Show reins in 2015. This also comes just two months after CBS abruptly axed The Late Show in a surprise move — one that may have spurred voters to reward Colbert on his way out.

The cancellation of Colbert's Late Show was "purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night," CBS insisted in a statement at the time. "It is not related in any way to the show's performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount." Many observers, though, pointed to Colbert's vocal criticism of President Donald Trump, along with the merger of CBS' parent company Paramount and Skydance Media that required approval from Trump's FCC.
