The Crown's Final Season Split In Two — Get Release Dates And Watch Teaser

The Crown's farewell won't happen all at once.

Netflix has split the upcoming sixth and final season of the Emmy-winning royal drama into two parts, TVLine has learned, with Part 1 premiering Thursday, Nov. 16 and Part 2 premiering Thursday, Dec. 14.

Part 1 will consist of four episodes and "depict a relationship blossoming between Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed before a fateful car journey has devastating consequences," per the official synopsis.

In Part 2, consisting of six episodes, "Prince William tries to integrate back into life at Eton in the wake of his mother's death as the monarchy has to ride the wave of public opinion," per the synopsis. Plus, "as she reaches her Golden Jubilee, the Queen reflects on the future of the monarchy with the marriage of Charles and Camilla and the beginnings of a new Royal fairy tale in William and Kate." Altogether, Season 6 will cover the years from 1997 to 2005 in Queen Elizabeth II's reign.

Netflix has also released a teaser for the new season, with Queen Elizabeth's voice being heard — first played by Claire Foy, then by Olivia Colman — as she ascends the stairs at Buckingham Palace and faces her royal subjects from her balcony, with Elizabeth finally played by current series star Imelda Staunton. The decision to end The Crown with Season 6 was first announced back in July 2020, with Staunton and Jonathan Pryce returning as Elizabeth and her husband Prince Philip. Dominic West and Elizabeth Debicki also return in Season 6 as Elizabeth's eldest son Prince Charles and his former wife Diana, with Lesley Manville back as Princess Margaret. Ed McVey and Meg Bellamy will make their debuts in Part 2 of Season 6 as Charles and Diana's son Prince William and his future wife Kate Middleton.
