The Crown Creator Peter Morgan Mulling Prequel Series: 'I Do Have An Idea'
Peter Morgan isn't quite ready to relinquish The Crown.
In a just-published Variety cover story, the creator of Netflix's soon-too-conclude royal drama confirms that he may expand the Emmy-winning franchise via a prequel series.
"I do have an idea," Morgan tells TVLine's sister pub. "But first, I need to do some other things. Second, it would need a unique set of circumstances to come together."
Morgan declined to reveal the premise of the potential follow-up, beyond saying that it would "definitely" predate The Crown's Elizabeth II era. "If I were to go back into The Crown," he shares, "it would definitely be to go back in time." (Previous reports speculated that the prequel would begin with the death of Queen Victoria in 1901 and end prior to the events of The Crown Season 1.)
Netflix boss Ted Sarandos, meanwhile, tells Variety that he has "absolute faith" in Morgan, adding, "If he believes there are stories to be told there, we definitely would explore it."
As previously reported, Netflix is splitting the upcoming sixth and final season of The Crown into two parts, with Part 1 premiering Thursday, Nov. 16 and Part 2 premiering Thursday, Dec. 14.
Part 1 (watch teaser trailer) will consist of four episodes and "depict a relationship blossoming between Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed before a fateful car journey has devastating consequences," per the official synopsis.
In Part 2, consisting of six episodes, "Prince William tries to integrate back into life at Eton in the wake of his mother's death as the monarchy has to ride the wave of public opinion," per the synopsis. Plus, "as she reaches her Golden Jubilee, the Queen reflects on the future of the monarchy with the marriage of Charles and Camilla and the beginnings of a new Royal fairy tale in William and Kate." Altogether, Season 6 will cover the years from 1997 to 2005 in Queen Elizabeth II's reign.
