The Muppet Show Reboot In The Works At Disney+ — Sabrina Carpenter To Appear In Backdoor Pilot
It's time to play the music, it's time to light the lights — and maybe, just maybe, it's time to bring back The Muppet Show.
Disney+ has ordered a new Muppets special for 2026 that will serve as a backdoor pilot for a potential reboot of the 1970s classic, Deadline reports. Special guest Sabrina Carpenter will appear alongside Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo and the gang "as they return to the Muppet Theatre to produce a variety show."
Veteran Muppet performers Bill Barretta, Dave Goelz, Eric Jacobson, Peter Linz, David Rudman and Matt Vogel all will return for the special.
The project is being shepherded by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (The Studio), with 20th Television, Disney Branded Television, The Muppets Studio and Point Grey Pictures all producing.
Rogen's Freaks and Geeks co-star, Jason Segel, successfully revived the franchise with 2011's The Muppets, which grossed more than $170 million at the box office. That was followed by a second, less successful movie — 2014's Muppets Most Wanted — and two short-lived shows: ABC's The Muppets (2015-16) and Disney+'s The Muppets Mayhem (2023).
Jim Henson's The Muppet Show ran for five seasons (120 episodes) in syndication between 1976 and 1981. It amassed 21 Emmy nominations and converted four of them, including a win for Outstanding Comedy-Variety or Music Series in 1978.
