The Paper Snags Early Season 2 Renewal Just One Day Before Peacock Premiere
Your subscription to The Paper has just been extended: Series stars Domhnall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore announced The Office spinoff's Season 2 renewal on NBC's Today Wednesday morning, just one day ahead of its series premiere on Peacock.
All 10 episodes of The Paper's first season hit the streamer Thursday, Sept. 4, thanks to a recent scheduling shake-up that changed the series' release from a weekly drop to a binge. (Read Dave Nemetz's review here.)
The early renewal is said to be a vote of confidence in the spinoff after NBCUniversal's positive reaction to the show's first episodes. According to a show rep, Daniels already has ideas in mind for Season 2, and this official go-ahead allows him to begin work now. The move also helps ensure that the series can return to screens this time next year, preventing too much of a gap in between seasons.
Hailing from The Office co-creator Greg Daniels and Michael Koman (Nathan For You), The Paper finds the same documentary crew that followed Dunder Mifflin's Scranton branch turning their cameras to an historic Toledo newspaper and its eager new editor-in-chief, played by The Patient's Gleeson. (Watch a trailer here.)
In addition to Gleeson and Impacciatore, the series stars Chelsea Frei (The Cleaning Lady), Melvin Gregg (Snowfall), Gbemisola Ikumelo (A League of Their Own), Ramona Young (Never Have I Ever), Tim Key (The Witchfinder), comedian Alex Edelman — and Oscar Nuñez, reprising his role from The Office as former Dunder Mifflin accountant Oscar.
