Dexter: Resurrection's Michael C. Hall On Why He 'Rolled The Dice' To Bring His Iconic Killer Back From The Dead — Watch
What if Dexter... didn't die? That's the question his portrayer Michael C. Hall just couldn't shake.
In Dexter: Resurrection (which premieres with two episodes Friday, July 11 on Paramount+ Premium, and airs Sunday, July 13 at 8/7c on Paramount+ With Showtime), Hall and his creative team bring the iconic killer back to life in order to give Dex a "second chance to do something that he's been struggling to do ever since Trinity killed his wife," Hall tells TVLine in the video above.
The continuation takes place just weeks after Dexter takes a bullet to the chest from his son Harrison (Jack Alcott), and awakens from his subsequent coma. Dex soon flees his hospital bed to travel to New York City where he hopes to make things right with his son. But the past is out to get him when Miami Metro's Det. Angel Batista (David Zayas) shows up with a lot of questions about Dexter's whereabouts and — small detail here — whether he's always been the Bay Harbor Butcher.
Hall says bringing the show back from the dead stemmed from missing and appreciating the creative family that emerged from the production throughout the years.
"I just let it come out of my mouth one day like, 'What if he didn't die?' If they didn't shoot him in the head, what would that look like? What kind of storytelling possibilities would that afford us?"
TVLine also spoke with James Remar (Harry Morgan), who is reprising his role as Dexter's ghostly dad after 12 years. Although the actor admitted that not being in Dexter: New Blood "kind of hurt," he calls his return for Resurrection both "emotional" and "exciting."
"I'm actually getting a little emotional reliving it because it was such a respectful and generous offer to be asked to come back and play a character that I first played in my 50s," he said.
In addition to Hall and Remar, Dexter: Resurrection stars Alcott, Zayas, Peter Dinklage, Uma Thurman, Krysten Ritter, Eric Stonestreet, David Dastmalchian, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, Kadia Saraf, Dominic Fumusa and Emilia Suárez.
