Dexter: Resurrection Finale: Dexter And Prater Finally Settle The Score — Plus, Another OG Cameo!

Great news, Dexter Morgan fans. Our guy didn't die at the end of this revival. And what's even better? Friday's season finale of Dexter: Resurrection puts in serious work to set the stage for even more franchise fun.

While a Season 2 seems incredibly promising, not everyone made it out of Resurrection alive. (Still mourning you, Angel Batista. R.I.P.!) Before we dive into where the story could go in the future, let's recap the final — yes, final! — showdown between The Bay Harbor Butcher and Mr. Leon Prater.

While still trapped inside the vault, Dexter takes a moment to cover Batista's body and pay his respects to his former colleague. "You were a good cop and an even better man," he says over Batista's body. (See? Dexter's got a teeny, tiny bit of empathy in there... maybe.) After Prater tells Charley to keep Dexter locked up for three days, Dex is visited by another apparition from his past: His brother, Brian Moser! The Ice Truck Killer, himself. As Dexter questions why Batista's death hurts so much, Brian chastises his brother for listening to Harry too much. If his dad is his guardian angel, looks like Dexter now has a devil on his shoulder, too. (Seeing Brian in the present storyline makes us feel pangs again for the dearly departed Original Sin prequel. It wasn't perfect, but it could've cooked up something special in Season 2 with this whole brother storyline. Guess we'll never know!)

While trying to figure out how to escape his new prison, Batista's cell phone rings. It's Quinn. Dexter doesn't answer that call for obvious reasons, but now he has a lifeline. He calls Harrison for help. He also finds Prater's files in the vault. The files detail the billionaire's findings on all of the current and past serial killers he's been obsessed with. Dexter begins frantically searching the paperwork for something that could point him toward the eight-digit vault code that could grant him freedom. The tricky part? He only has one chance to enter the right code or the alarm blares.

Harrison gets a gig as a caterer for Prater's gala, communicating with his dad via Airpods and FaceTime. But while Harrison attempts to pick a lock into the penthouse, Charley catches him in the act and she's fully armed. Dexter then shows Charley the files Prater's been keeping on her, which include a photo of Charley and Mia, timestamped right before Mia's tragic "suicide." Prater's been documenting Charley's dirty work for a long time, so Dex threatens to Airdrop those files to the cops partying at the gala, unless she lets Harrison go and frees Dexter from the vault. Charley counters. She'll let Harrison live, but if Dexter releases any of that damning info, she'll find Harrison, torture him and kill him. Charley scrams, leaving Dexter and Harrison to figure out how to crack the code, which they do. The magic numbers: The inmate numbers of the man who killed Prater's parents.

Charley quits her job, telling Prater that she's going to disappear. She tells him she knows all about the file he kept on her and orders him to keep paying for her mother's medical care. While Prater is on stage, he spots Harrison trying to sneak out of the event. After ordering his security detail to cut the feed on all his cameras, Prater captures Harrison at gunpoint and coaxes Dexter to return to the wine room. He wants Dex to witness his first proper, non-impulsive kill. Dexter then offers Prater something better. Don't kill Harrison, kill him instead. The Bay Harbor Butcher. Remember that "protection" Dexter gave Harrison a while back? It wasn't a condom. It was actually a syringe full of drugs. As Prater raises his weapon to fire at Dexter, Harrison sticks the syringe deep inside his chest.

Prater winds up stripped naked and wrapped in plastic in the center of his own trophy room. Prater's "buffet of killers" makes Dexter realize he does share his dad's thirst for justice after all. Dexter then stabs Prater in the chest and chops his body into pieces. But on his way out, he sounds the penthouse alarm and exits via the elevator just as the gala guests all head upstairs. The vault door is open and the city's entire police force stumbles upon Batista's body, Prater's trophies and most importantly, the file on the New York Ripper, whose identity unfortunately remains a mystery... for now.

Dexter steals Prater's yacht and dumps his body bags in the New York Harbor, right in front of the Statue of Liberty. As the garbage bags sink below the water's depths, Dexter opens a duffel bag to reveal that he hung on to some of Prater's files. Files on the Midnight Mangler, Jawsplitter, the Yonkers Slayer, and of course, Rapunzel. More serial killers to hunt. More blood to add to his slides. The season ends with a monologue. Dexter says he used to wish he could be different, a man free of his dark passenger. But now, he revels in who — and what — he is. The man that we, the audience, want him to be.
