Suits LA: Ted And Harvey Have A Batman-Off — Was Gabriel Macht's First Episode Worth The Hype?
It's been almost six years since Suits fans last saw Harvey Specter on screen, and no, those T-Mobile commercials don't count. But with this Sunday's episode of the spinoff Suits LA, viewers got a new dose of Gabriel Macht's charismatic lawyer in a very different context.
Just as creator Aaron Korsh previewed to TVLine, Harvey appeared without any storytelling fanfare during a mid-episode flashback to Ted's time in New York in 2010, when he was trying to take down mobster Pellegrini. The case was weighing on Ted so much that his pitches kept striking the batter during a prosecutors' league baseball game. Kevin was about to go talk to Ted, but then the shortstop stepped in, and, suddenly, there was Harvey!
"You're the closest thing to Batman besides me that I've ever seen, and he's the second batter you've hit this inning," Harvey commented.
"First of all, you're the closest thing to Batman that I've ever seen besides me," Ted replied.
"Batman, doesn't say things like that," Harvey shot back.
After the batty banter, Ted admitted that he was frustrated because Pellegrini came into his brother Eddie's diner, and now the mobster has Eddie and Ted's girlfriend scared. Harvey told his buddy Ted that he'll buy him a couple drinks after the game and they'll talk this over.
The pep talk worked because Ted got his head out of his you-know-what long enough to help the team land a spot in the playoffs, Harvey commented, leaving Ted feeling "insulted and complimented at the same time."
At the bar, Harvey ordered a fancy Macallan 25 whiskey for himself, Ted and even Eddie ("Goddammit, Harvey, you lied! This is awful! I'm getting a pineapple juice," Eddie declared after a sip). Harvey loves the smooth taste of the whiskey, but he was probably also hoping it would help with the bad news he was about to deliver: He called his people in the DA's office, and word is that Pellegrini has someone in Ted's office, Harvey revealed.
After Harvey reassured Ted that he doesn't need to be worried for his safety, Ted noted that Harvey left the DA's office five years ago, so how long is he going to play for the prosecutors' league?
Harvey challenged Ted by asking if he'd rather play for the championship with him or against him. That launched a new round of Batman wisecracks:
Ted: "Oh, you think I couldn't take you?"
Harvey: "There's only one Batman."
Ted: "I know. You just bought him a drink."
Harvey: "I know. I bought myself a drink. I'm Batman. You could be Robin."
Ted: "I'm Superman."
It went on and on (getting kind of nonsensical at one point) until Ted finally accepted his fate as Robin.
And that brought an end to Macht's all-too-brief return as Harvey in this episode, but never fear, he will be back for two more installments, eventually appearing in the present day, Korsh told TVLine. And thank goodness, because the more Harvey, the better, especially if it gives us an update on what he's up to now.
