The Bear: Carmy And Claire Finally Have It Out In An Emotionally Raw Reunion — Do They Belong Together?
Warning: This post contains spoilers for Season 4, Episode 3 of The Bear.
Ever since Carmy locked himself in the walk-in fridge in The Bear's Season 2 finale, we've been waiting for him to have a talk with Claire — and he finally did.
In the third episode of The Bear's fourth season (now streaming on Hulu), Carmy finishes up a night of service at his restaurant and finds himself gazing at the walk-in fridge. It seems to spark a realization in him, because he sprints outside and catches a train, running to knock on Claire's door. Ted Fak answers, since he's dating Kelly, who lives with Claire ("I feel like I'm in a f–king Disney Channel original movie, dawg"), but eventually, Claire emerges, joining Carmy on the stoop.
He tries to stammer through an apology — if you remember, while he was locked in that fridge, he ranted that his relationship with Claire was distracting him from his restaurant, not knowing that Claire could hear him — but Claire stops him: "I'm not going to sit here and help you try to do the right thing." He says he hates what he did: "I said what I said because it was easy to say. And the way I feel around you is really hard." What's hard about it, she asks? "It made me feel like I was on fire." So is that a bad thing? "No, it was the best," he gushes. (The whole scene is shot in intense close-up, too, making it feel all the more intimate.)
He loves her, he confesses, but "I didn't know what to do with that feeling," so he kept it inside, amid all the noise in his head. "I wish you let me on the noise a little bit more," she tells him, adding that she was scared, too: "I don't want to be scared that I'm gonna push you away by just being around you." They both get heated and emotional, raising their voices and talking over each other until he says: "I didn't know what to do. I couldn't f–king do it. I'm sorry. I'm so f–king sorry."
She always thought that if they could push past all that noise, sure, it would be scary, "but maybe also incredible." She thanks him for apologizing, and stands up to go back inside, adding: "I hope you find some quiet, whatever that is for you." He tries to stop her, but she's firm: "I'm gonna be OK. I hope you're OK. Good night, Bear." With that, she shuts the door on him — and their relationship, it seems.
