Why Teagan Tao From Crew Girl Looks So Familiar

The coming-of-age teen drama "Crew Girl" shot to the top of Netflix's global chart in its first week on the platform. It centers on rower Teagan Tao, who is played by Miku Martineau. After a family scandal, Teagan and her mom uproot their lives and head east to start over. On top of having her world turned upside down, Teagan's new prep school doesn't have a girls' rowing team, so she is forced to become the coxswain of the boys' team. On the romantic front, Teagan navigates feelings for two wildly different boys.

Martineau took to Instagram to celebrate "Crew Girl" becoming number one globally on Netflix after the news broke, but the show isn't actually her first collaboration with the streamer. Her breakout role was in the 2021 Netflix film "Kate," in which she co-starred alongside Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Woody Harrelson as the niece of a Japanese mob boss. The action thriller didn't do particularly well with critics, but her next Netflix project was well received.

There's a chance you recognize Martineau from "Bet," a Netflix show based on the manga series "Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler." It follows Martineau's Yumeko Kawamoto, a teen gambler who uses her talents to increase her social standing at St. Dominic's, an elite private school. The show premiered to solid reviews from critics and audiences alike in 2025 and has since been renewed for a second season, so, while "Crew Girl" is yet to be officially renewed, you can still expect to see a lot more of Martineau on Netflix in the next few years.

Netflix isn't the only streamer that appreciates Miku Martineau's talents. In 2025, she co-starred in the Paramount+ movie "Star Trek: Section 31" as the younger version of Emperor Philippa Georgiou, played by Oscar-winning star Michelle Yeoh. The proximity meant a lot to the rising star. "I am so proud. I'm so proud to be a Japanese-Canadian actor and to have played a younger version of Michelle," she told Streets of Toronto in September 2026. "It is because of actors like Michelle — who years before me paved the path in the industry — that I'm able to be given the opportunities to audition for leading roles."

Martineau was also in the Paramount+ movie "Honor Society," a coming-of-age comedy starring Angourie Rice, Gaten Matarazzo, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse. It follows Rice's Honor Rose, who sets about getting rid of her rivals for her music teacher's letter of recommendation to Harvard. "Honor Society" did well with the critics, scoring an impressive 85% on Rotten Tomatoes. Martineau's other notable credits include the Canadian fantasy series "Ruby and the Well" and Peacock's "The Miniature Wife," in which she plays a student who is accidentally plagiarized by Elizabeth Banks' best-selling author character.
