Survivor 51 Premiere Recap: 'Permanent Uncertainty' Runs Amok, As Jeff Reveals A Shocking New Spin On A Past Twist

The Open Era of "Survivor" is officially upon us!

With the landmark 50th season now a thing of the past, "Survivor" broke new (and nostalgic) ground in its Season 51 premiere Wednesday, with new castaways, new twists, and one particularly mega reveal that shocked the players and us alike.

When we caught up with host Jeff Probst at the "51" premiere, he promised us seven returning elements from six different seasons (plus, three new game mechanics), and the two-hour launch episode delivered all of that and more. After the 21 contestants untied supplies and leapt off a ship in the middle of the ocean, Probst told them the game was now in their hands. They control what happens, they dictate who leaves, they decide who wins. But in order to succeed, they must brace themselves for "permanent uncertainty."

So how did the first entry of the Open Era fare? Let's break down the premiere's biggest and best moments.

With no buffs, no tribes, and no explanation, the castaways trudge on to dry land, with all of them sharing the same beach, "One World"-style. The unique situation starts fueling quick connections. Aaliyah talks about feeling connected to Devin, Sharonda, Ori, and Jelly from the jump, while Jelly and Ori start flirting over their shared love of... lasagna?! (They're not even starving yet!) Jelly says she might even get "wifed up" thanks to her bangin' Italian cooking. "When he said lasagna was his dream meal, something in me lit up," she tells us. And now here I am, spending an entire paragraph talking about reality TV contestants' love of lasagna.

Buffs are eventually dropped to the players, revealing that for the first time since "Winners at War," the game would be starting with just two tribes. (We are so back!) Unfortunately for one contestant, he will not be getting a buff so soon. Because he — Lewis — volunteers to be shipped off into the unknown. That unknown is eventually revealed to be Exile Island... but with a twist.

I've gotta say: You'd never see me volunteering for some mystery punishment before the game really gets cooking. No sir, no ma'am. Luckily for the Irish farmer from Puerto Rico, his fate doesn't match that of "Palau" early boots Wanda Shirk and Jonathan Libby, who were eliminated from the game after not being selected in a schoolyard pick'em. Rather, Lewis has a surprise visitor in the form of Jeff Probst (what?!) who gives him a chance to win an immunity idol off the bat.

All he has to do is chop down an entire log with the world's tiniest l'il axe. The rules are fairly simple. He can't climb the post, nor can he shake it. He has to chop the entire thing down with the axe, and only then can he claim the prize perched on top. The lad shows a lot of heart in his endeavor, tearing the skin on his hands to pieces in his attempt to get a leg up on his competition. Unfortunately, that idol winds up staying at Exile after Lewis admits defeat, perhaps waiting to be snagged by the next exiled inhabitant. A real bummer of a start for Lewis, who puts a respectable amount of sweat and manpower into the attempt. At least he's safe from the first Tribal Council?

At the immunity challenge, Jeff tells the cast about a returning twist, first used last season in "Survivor 50": the coin flip! It's back and even more hardcore than before. In every season of the Open Era, one player will flip the coin, a la Devens. Like in "50," if the person flips the coin and sticks it correctly, $1 million will be added to the prize, and he or she will receive an idol. But it gets even crazier! If the person who flips the coin does not land it, there is no Tribal Council because that person goes home immediately. But that extra million? It carries forward to the next season. Which means a future player will flip a coin worth $2 million, for a total grand prize worth $3 million! And if that doesn't land, then it becomes a $3 million coin flip, for a total prize of $4 million, and so on and so forth. That said, a future player may win even more moolah than Tony Vlachos and Aubry Bracco did! Let that sink in for a second.

After Probst drops this bombshell, Toca (the yellow tribe) and Savu (purple) compete in the first immunity challenge of the season. It's a doozy of an obstacle course, including massive crates that need to be unlocked and pushed through a cargo net. After some heavy lifting and a "Survivor" puzzle, Savu secures its safety, sending Toca to the season's first Tribal Council.

The first conversations revolve around Jenna and Aaliyah. Jenna, for starters, is perceived as dodgy. Her inability to open up to the tribe makes those around her feel like she's hiding something. Some of them (Devin) question whether she's even a wedding photographer! (I don't know what someone could gain from lying about being a... photographer, but Devin seems stuck on it.) Jenna tells us in an interview that the reason she's closed off is because she's going through a divorce, and it caused her to close down. And that's what people felt. Tough baggage to come into a game like "Survivor" with.

For Aaliyah, it was her part of the challenge where the tribe lost the most time — untying knots and retrieving balls that were needed to knock down their key. But Jenna takes matters into her own hands by telling Brady and Kilby that Aaliyah was talking smack about Brady's intensity during the challenge. (Granted, Jelly and Patt were also in on that conversation.) But hey! If you're feeling the target on your back growing bigger by the second, the only way out is to try to pass that target off to someone else. Brady immediately gets riled up that his name was being mentioned, and just like that, a vendetta is born.

Devin is peeved that he now has to put in work to try to save his ally Aaliyah, so he tells people straight up that he's gunning for Jenna. This Jenna vs. Aaliyah debacle only puts Devin at odds with his supposed No. 1 Brady, but will this difference in opinion put them at odds moving forward?

At Tribal Council, Jenna acknowledges she's in the hot seat because of her first impression, which only opens the door for Devin to try and sink her game. He says she's smart and cunning, and if she survives the first Tribal, she'll glide to the end of the game. But when Patt brings up the fact that Aaliyah's name is also on the chopping block, Aaliyah is stunned — and that's when the whispering begins. We've got a live one, people!

When it's time to vote, both women play their Shots in the Dark, but neither of them gets safety. Somebody's gotta be first out and sadly for Aaliyah, she's the unlucky one sent packing by a vote of 6-2.
