Netflix is diving deep into adapting literary classics for its new shows, and it has recruited several familiar faces to draw audiences to its new miniseries "East of Eden." The series adapts John Steinbeck's 1952 novel "East of Eden," which follows the Trask family as they face interfamily conflict and contemplate morality. The two key characters at the beginning of the story are Charles and Adam Trask, two half-brothers who gain wealth through their father's deception.

But those who tune in to the "East of Eden" limited series will likely recognize the actor playing Charles Trask, the more deceitful and resentful brother of the Trask family. Mike Faist, who plays the character, has already starred in two major releases in the 2020s. The first was "West Side Story," Steven Spielberg's Oscar-nominated readaptation of the stage musical. Faist played Jets leader Riff, which was one of the standout performances within the musical, giving him a great launchpad for his career.

Three years later, Faist had a lead role in one of 2024's most culturally significant movies, "Challengers." Though "Challengers" made under $100 million at the box office and was blanked by the Oscars, the movie became a cultural sensation with its score invading social media, the story sparking discourse for weeks, and the title even becoming a euphemism. Faist played a key part in this film as Art, the famous blonde-haired tennis player who rivals Patrick (Josh O'Connor) for Tashi's (Zendaya) affections.

Netflix's East of Eden is Faist's first project since Challengers

Mike Faist has starred in a few other notable projects. In 2023, he played photographer Danny Lyon alongside Jodie Comer, Austin Butler, and Tom Hardy in "The Bikeriders." In 2021, Faist starred in the Amazon Prime young adult series "Panic," which was canceled after one season. Or you may have seen him as one of the suspects in "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" Season 19. Before his screen career, Faist also made a name for himself on Broadway, bagging a Tony nomination in 2017 for playing Connor Murphy in the initial Broadway run of "Dear Evan Hansen."

But after "Challengers," Faist has had a career lull. "Maybe there was an aspect of me just trying to say, I'm going to pull back from all of this and allow things to be quiet," the "East of Eden" actor said of his acting break in an interview with Cultured. "The truth is that 'Challengers' was a lot. It was very overwhelming, and it was an intense summer, things did change for me, and the dust had to settle a little bit."

He added, "It was very jarring. It was a whiplash situation. It's something that I wasn't very prepared for, and I'm not sure if any of us were quite ready for it." With "East of Eden" starring Florence Pugh, the Netflix adaptation is bound to bring Faist back into the limelight. But after his previous experience, Faist may be better prepared to deal with the fanfare.
