Outlander: Blood Of My Blood Recap: Brian Learns Ellen's Secret, Henry And Julia's Reunion Turns Tragic
Against all odds, Henry makes it back to the 1700s in this week's "Outlander: Blood of My Blood." That in and of itself should be a cause for celebration, given that he navigates metaphysical travel through centuries armed only with a stick pin brooch and the guidance of a well-meaning housekeeper.
But there's little to cheer about when Henry finally gets in the same room as Julia and realizes a) she knows about his time spent at Seema's brothel, and b) he's completely forgotten that he and Julia have a daughter. What a fraught reunion for the Beauchamps!
At least we have a little jolt of joy as Brian learns he's going to be a father. And the fact that he rides off to very dangerous battle soon after? We're going to disregard that for now.
Read on for the highlights of "A Portion of My Soul."
About 10 seconds after Henry goes through the stones, he's captured and brought to Arch Bug. Arch is about to kill him, but Murdina Bug sees the electroconvulsive therapy marks on his head and instantly assumes Henry has been cavorting with the faeries. Realizing that he's got nothing to lose, Henry shows them the stitches on his scalp and says that the wee folk put "lightning" in his head. Appropriately cowed, Arch apologizes for telling Henry that Julia and their son were dead, then brings him up to speed on everything that's happened to the Grants. And when Uncle Mac orders Henry lashed for running away, Bug only pretends to do so, because he doesn't want a horde of angry faeries raining mischief down upon him. Looks like Henry's bought himself a reprieve from the beat-downs (for now)!
Meanwhile, at Castle Leathers, Julia intercepts a letter for Lovat and learns that Henry is back. "I'm going to my husband," she tearfully tells Davina, and neither of them realize that Seema overhears all.
What has Seema done?!
Dressed in men's clothing and carrying a small blade Davina lends her, Julia makes her way to the Grant's. An overjoyed Henry sneaks her into his quarters, where he immediately takes her into his arms and asks about William. She assures him their son is safe, and then — off her questions about the marks on his body — he fills her in on everything that happened when he went back. Julia's face progressively falls as she realizes he isn't mentioning their daughter, Claire, so she point-blank asks him if he went to London to find her. And then Henry dies a million deaths, because he can't remember their little girl at all.
"What did they do to you?" Julia asks, horrified. Henry tries to explain how the doctors tried to remove his traumatic war memories, but the bigger pain was in regard to abandoning Claire. "They burned her out of me with their wires and their current," he says, overcome. "Sometimes, I'm not even sure what's real anymore." And now he's back, but he has to leave to fight with the Grants so soon... and that's when Julia has reached her limit, physically stepping away from her husband and announcing that she NEEDS A MINUTE.
Once she's taken a breath and removed her coat, Julia asks Henry about Seema. "It's not what you think," he says quickly. "Tell me what it is," she presses. He walks her through the mental breakdown he experienced after thinking that she and William had died, up to and including when he had sex with Seema and imagined she was Julia. Julia is disgusted. Henry is sobbing. "The grief, it broke something in me," he manages to get out. "When I realized, it was like losing you all over again." Yes, she says, but they've seen each other since then: Why didn't he tell her? "I was a coward," Henry sadly replies. Eventually, it shakes out to the fact that Julia can forgive him, "but forgetting — that will take some time."
She urges him to find the old Henry "for me, for our children." He swears that he will. "And then, then we'll forget together, when you return," she adds, crying. Eventually, they put everything aside, because Henry IS about to leave to fight. "I need my husband now," she says. "Tonight." So they have sex, even though everything is very not OK between the two of them.
In the morning, he wakes to find her sitting at his desk. She wrote him a letter, marked "SWAK" like in the old days. "You wrote first last time. Now it's my turn," she informs him, ordering him to bring it home when he safely returns. They kiss. They trade I love yous. Then he leaves with the Grant men, and Julia slips home after everyone has gone.
Back at Leathers, Julia quickly realizes that both Davina and William are nowhere to be found. There is a troubling-looking omen left in the baby's cradle, though. And when Seema enters, brandishing a knife and babbling about how she and Henry actually loved each other, things seem very bad, indeed.
Ellen and Grace inform the men of Lovat's treachery
Out in the country, Ellen and Grace arrive at Lovat's camp to let the men know Lovat has turned coat and means to ambush Dougal. The redhead quickly reviews everything that happened since the men left, and that Lovat's underhanded behavior is all because he's been promised a restoration of his title by the Duke of Argyll. Brian and Murtagh instantly go to confront the old man, who doesn't deny a thing: When he takes Inverness for the Crown, he reasons, Brian will have a title, too! "You taught me an oathbreaker deserves no loyalty," Brian spits, announcing that he's choosing Ellen over his father. And when Brian leaves with Ellen, Grace, and Murtagh, SImon Fraser sends his henchman, Balloch, after them.
Brian, Ellen & Co. intercept Dougal and his men, warning them that they're riding into Simon Fraser's trap. Ellen also takes her brother aside to warn him that MacKinney clearly is not a MacKenzie supporter, yet his men still ride with Dougal's troops. Dougal wants to ride into Inverness and fight, but Ellen and Brian reason with him to go south, to Perth, and meet up with the other men. Then Ellen gently tells Dougal that Janet is dead. I know I'm already so gone for Doogie and his new missus, but I loved the way he instantly asks about Maura and how relieved he is to hear she's OK. Then Dougal puts his gruff pants back on and growls at Brian that they'll put their differences aside for now and settle "what's between us" if they both survive the war.
When Jocasta's husband, John Cameron, sees Grace in camp, he wonders why she's there. But he gets over his confusion quickly and makes sure she winds up in his tent, where he follows her and closes the flap behind them. From the body language she exhibits, methinks Grace is not a willing participant in whatever happens next.
Brian learns he's going to be a dad
Meanwhile, Brian and Ellen manage to steal away for a few quiet moments. He asks about Janet. "She would have liked you... eventually," Ellen says. Then Ellen spirals a bit about how insane it is that they're trying to make a go of it amid war and family strife and [waves hands] everything. But he promises her that he's hers, and then they're taking each other's clothes off with the quickness. Just before he lifts her shift off, she stops him and presses his hand to her belly... and his face FALLS. Brian instantly assumes he's going to be a horrible father, given his role model, but Ellen assures him that Simon has nothing to do with what's between them. "Our child?" he asks, in awe and coming around to the idea. "Our child," she says definitively. He kneels, placing his hands reverently on her abdomen before kissing it. Then, the rest of their clothes hit the ground and they have mutually satisfying farewell sex.
At a nearby fire, Murtagh and Grace continue the flirting they started at Leoch. But when he goes to cover her with his plaid to ward off the chill, she quickly stands and runs away. The next morning, he apologizes for being "too bold." She reassures him that she wasn't offended, the move was merely unexpected. Then she gifts him a cloth flower, which she sews to his cuff "so you remember there's kindness in the world." Then they touch hands for a lingering moment (GAH! I LOVE THEM, TOO!) before she blesses him and leaves.
Ellen and Brian say their goodbyes in a private clearing, where she makes him swear to fight "like you have everything to lose." She frets that she has no token to give him to remember her by, "But ye have," he says, touching her stomach. And then, as duty and the story demands, they part ways again.
