Season 1 of "Lanterns" has wrapped up with strong ratings and critical acclaim. But will the HBO series get a second season? According to DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran, that depends on whether the team can develop a worthy follow-up.

"If we're able to come up with what we believe to be a worthy successor to a beloved and great first season, that's what's going to dictate whether there's a second season," Safran told Collider. When asked if that was the "deciding factor" for a renewal, he answered definitively, "Yes."

Safran also praised what the series has already accomplished: "This was one great season of television based on a property that had been somewhat irradiated since 2011 ... it's brought Green Lantern back into the conversation, into the public culture in a really positive fashion." He also said fans should have more clarity on the show's future before the end of 2026.

Another question for Season 2: What happens to Hal Jordan?

One question hanging over a potential second season of "Lanterns" is whether Hal (Kyle Chandler) will return. Chandler's performance was one of the most acclaimed parts of Season 1, but the character doesn't exactly end on a note that implies he'll return.

In his interview with Collider, Peter Safran was asked whether John (Aaron Pierre) charging the ring in the finale implied anything about Hal's fate. "I can't weigh in on what it means when he charges the ring at the end of the season," Safran said.

The show's co-creator Damon Lindelof also acknowledged that he doesn't know what a second season might look like. "I can look you in the eye and honestly say that I do not know anything about the creative for a second season of 'Lanterns.' However, I do know that there are conversations swirling around it," he told The Daily Beast in early October. Lindelof added, echoing Safran's comments, "Nobody wants to do it just because the first season was successful. That is to say, everyone's approaching it with the point of view of, 'should there be a second season? Is the creative worthy of a second season?'"
