TVLine's Performer Of The Week: Keri Russell
THE PERFORMER | Keri Russell
THE SHOW | "The Diplomat"
THE EPISODE | "Pagliacci" (October 15, 2026)
THE PERFORMANCE | As Kate Wyler, the titular diplomat in Netflix's gripping political thriller, Keri Russell always has plenty of twists thrown at her each season, and she always infuses Kate with a cool proficiency, even while she's juggling multiple international bombshells. There are times, though, when that cool façade of Kate's breaks a little, and that happened in Episode 4 this season, as a combination of political upheaval and personal tragedy pushed Kate to the very brink — and it led to some of Russell's finest work in the series.
As the episode opened, Kate learned that her U.K. counterpart (and occasional flirting partner) Austin Dennison had been killed in a helicopter crash. But she barreled right through to deal with the next crisis, seemingly willing herself not to display any discernible reaction. (Not yet, anyway.) Hal could tell something was wrong, though, and when he later asked her for some simple eye contact, Kate reluctantly complied... and then Russell's face began to crumple with the tidal wave of emotion she'd been suppressing.
But they did have a crisis to deal with — of course — and when Hal advised Kate to threaten the British PM Trowbridge with blackmail if he didn't do what they wanted, Russell visibly bristled, with Kate sternly accusing him of being a "mafioso" and warning him not to hug her: "I don't recommend that." It wasn't until Stuart stopped by that Kate allowed herself to fully feel the grief of Dennison's death, sharing a poignant toast in his honor. (She even advised Stuart to pop the question to Eidra, reminding us that the tough-as-nails Kate has a romantic side, too.)
So Kate was already emotionally wrung dry when she sat down with Trowbridge for a pivotal meeting, and when Trowbridge turned frosty and told her she wasn't welcome at Dennison's funeral, we saw a flicker of anger catch fire in Kate's eyes. Her diplomatic veneer dropped as she unloaded on Trowbridge, making her blackmail threat plain before storming out. It was an uncharacteristically impulsive move from Kate, and maybe the least diplomatic we've ever seen her. But it made perfect sense, too... because Russell took such great care to show us every gradual shift within Kate's complicated psyche along the way. — Dave Nemetz

HONORABLE MENTION: Samantha Sloyan
In "Carrie," Samantha Sloyan brought new depths to Margaret White, the prom queen's overly religious, overbearing mother. And while the character had strange ways of showing affection for her daughter, her fear of Carrie took hold in the finale. The actress still imbued Margaret with a softness when her super-powered daughter returned home wanting a hug from "Mama." But when Margaret asked her daughter for forgiveness — for what we all knew was coming — the tears streaming down Sloyan's face spoke volumes of the complicated emotions at play, as mom tried (but failed) to kill her. In Sloyan's final scene with Adelaide, the actress again displayed love, strength, and terror after being told she never could've given Carrie what the girl needed. When Adelaide slowed Margaret's heart, watching this dark but deep woman leave this world hit like a gut-punch. Fear consumed Sloyan's eyes. Her breath became increasingly labored. Despite Margaret's monstrous tendencies, Sloyan held space for the woman and her many conflicting layers, treating her final chapter with both humanity and grace. — Nick Caruso
