Marshals Recap: Andrea Makes An Emotional Confession To Kayce After A Near-Death Experience
Buckle up, "Marshals" fans, because Kayce and Andrea is totally happening. Is there any other way to feel after Sunday's episode, which ends with Andrea showing up at East Camp in tears with a big, emotional confession? The "Yellowstone" spin-off is clearly giving these two the slow-burn treatment, and we can't wait to watch 'em cook.
Season 2, Episode 5 begins where last week's cliffhanger left us, with the Marshals emerging from the wreckage of Rudy Carpenter's exploded hideout. Carpenter is killed in the blast, but other than a few bumps and bruises, the good guys come out of it largely unscathed.
The team then infiltrates the home of Carpenter's suspected accomplice, but Andrea freezes up when she has to follow a runner down into the basement. Kayce is left to chase after the guy, following him into a barn that ends up collapsing, nearly killing Kayce for the second time in... you know what, never mind. He's a Dutton. Near-death experiences should be expected on a weekly basis.
But that's not how Andrea sees it. She pays Kayce an unexpected late-night visit at the end of the hour ("It's not the worst ambush I've encountered," he says) to apologize for putting his life on the line, and to come clean about how she's been hunting fugitives with him to avoid having PTSD-induced nightmares about her kidnapping.
Andrea also explains that looking into her father's murder is an attempt at putting her mind "at ease," and she's terrified about taking over when Cal goes on medical leave. It's a lot for her to get off her chest in one conversation.
Kayce apologizes for not seeing Andrea's struggle, admitting that he's been preoccupied by Cal's cancer battle. A consummate gentleman, Kayce offers Andrea some tea since she isn't going to sleep, but before he can even boil the water, she falls soundly asleep on his couch.
When it comes to this budding relationship, it's more about what's not being said than what is. It's the smile on Kayce's face when he first sees Andrea standing in his doorway. It's the fact that Andrea feels comfortable enough to fall asleep on Kayce's couch, crippling nightmares be damned! Heck, even Luke Grimes and Ash Santos have admitted that their characters have a nice will-they-won't-they dynamic going on, so at least we know we're not completely insane.
Elsewhere on Marshals Season 2, Episode 5...
- While negotiating with a suspect this week, Kayce connects with him over being the black sheep of a cruel family. "You remind me of my middle brother," Kayce says, alluding to Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley). "Never quite fit in, always on the bad end of a beatdown. My sister made his life hell. She'd eat you for lunch — meaner than any of your brothers, guaranteed. ... Fighting wasn't in his nature, so he had to be smarter, more cunning, and eventually he broke from the family, forged his own path. It's never too late to start standing up for yourself." (OK, but will we ever address that Beth killed him?!)
- When Belle finds out that one of her debt collectors scared her son, she resorts to similarly personal methods, threatening to put his daughter behind bars if he ever comes near Braxton again. "Family is off-limits," Belle says, adding that she'll give him the money when she gets it.
- Miles' pal Shane Whitebear reveals that he's running against Rainwater for Chairman of Broken Rock, even asking for Miles' endorsement. Miles reminds Whitebear of his loyalty to Rainwater, but his friend wonders why, when Rainwater is clearly just using him as a political prop.
OK, let's talk: Did you appreciate that little Jamie callback? Are you feeling the love between Kayce and Andrea? And do you think Belle only her situation worse by standing up to her collector? Drop a comment with your thoughts on this week's "Marshals" below.
