While some TV actors are kept in the loop about the future of their characters, that's not always the case. It appears that Dann Florek was totally blindsided by the fact that his character Donald Cragen would be killed off in the "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" Season 27 premiere. Florek explained that he was "stunned" by the news in an interview with the "Tis Yourself" podcast. "That was kind of a surprise, out of the blue," he said, adding that when he got the call about Cragen's fate he tried to push back against the decision, but the powers that be had made up their minds. "They felt it was a necessary thing for them that I still quite don't understand."

Florek was particularly surprised by the decision because his guest appearances on "Law & Order: Organized Crime" had led him to believe that there would be a new era for Cragen. "I thought we were discovering a whole new side of the character, that he could be less buttoned down out of the squad room, and just a whole other side of him and his personality," Florek explained. That wasn't to be, but the actor was moved by the response from fans following his exit from "SVU" after 35 years as Cragen. "They would point out their favorite episodes and things like that," he said. "It was kind of heartwarming — bittersweet but heartwarming to see how people responded to that."

Mariska Hargitay said the funeral scene acted itself

"Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" has been on the air since 1999. It's the longest-running scripted live-action series in the history of American television. Many of the cast members have formed deep bonds over the decades, so it makes sense that real life emotions would mirror the loss of a major character. Mariska Hargitay, who stars as Captain Olivia Benson, said as much when she reflected on the funeral for Captain Cragen on The Kelly Clarkson Show.

"That was what was so beautiful about it, these scenes, they almost act themselves because the circumstances are so powerful and there's such genuine love for the captain, for the actor," Hargitay explained. She went on to say that the emotions were heightened because of returning cast members such as Dean Winters, B.D. Wong, and Christopher Meloni. "These scenes are so earned that there's just an ease and an effortlessness to it because we lived it," she added. "Law & Order: SVU" Season 28 premiered on October 8, 2026.
