American Music Awards: Best & Worst Moments

Though I'll admit I was holding my breath as Gomez descended those stairs — can you imagine if she tumbled down ass-backwards?! — I found her whole performance, including a surprising dance break, to be thoroughly impressive.

Not only is there nothing wrong with being confident, but there was also nothing wrong with Lovato's killer performance of her latest hit. Who needs lip syncing when you have, you know, actual talent? Well done, Lovato. Poot would be proud.

I'll personally cut a check to anyone who can tell me the name of the song Underwood sang at the AMAs. (No Googling!) It wasn't a bad performance, and I love me some floating lanterns, but it definitely got lost in the three-hour sea of music.

They've flirted on camera before, but Trainor and Puth fully embraced their whole "let's Marvin Gaye and get it on" mantra with a post-performance lip lock that had them trending on Twitter all night.

Sure, Grande crushed it with her performance of "Focus," but she was no match for the spotlight-stealing power of her grandmother (aka "Nona"). When is her debut album dropping?!

While it's true that Piggy wasn't technically part of this year's show, a special promo for The Muppets aired during the three-hour ceremony, one that found Piggy slipping into Adele's wind-swept "Hello" scarf. Ever the trouper, Kermit also took quite a beating during the parody. (Watch it here!)

I know Kendrick is busy churning out A+ movies, but do you think she might also have the time to write every single acceptance speech for every actor/singer moving forward? This might have been the only time in awards show history that I didn't want the person to be played off.

Everything about the AMAs' tribute to Star Wars — a fellow Disney property — was perfect, from Harrison Ford's surprise appearance...

...to the insane vocal rendition of the Star Wars soundtrack, courtesy of Pentatonix. (Seriously, Mitch Grassi sang so high at one point, I'm pretty sure only dogs could hear him.)

I love me some Lovato — as noted in an earlier slide — but was it really necessary to have her accompany Morissette for a performance of "You Oughta Know"? Twenty years after the release of Jagged Little Pill, Morissette remains flawless and could have totally stood on her own. (Plus, I can't be the only person who noticed Lovato mouthing the wrong lyrics during one of Morissette's lines...)

Even when Minaj wasn't serving stank-eye, she seemed to be the go-to person for the cameras to cut mid-performance. I guess that's what happens when you don't have dancing-Taylor-Swift to fall back on, huh?

Clueless' Cher and Elton, together again? And to introduce Gwen Stefani?! This was almost too much for our '90s-loving hearts to bear.
amas-best-moments-07
Speaking of Stefani, how much of a downer was her performance of "Used to Love You"? If you'll excuse me, I need to call Gavin Rossdale to make see how he's holding up.

And while we're swimming in '90s nostalgia over here, did anyone else get all emotional when Sean Combs — I don't know what else he's calling himself these days — gave a little shout-out to ex-girlfriend JLo?

I realize I've constructed a very specific category here — who did you think would win this, Prince? — but it seems the boys of 1D are doing A-OK following the departure of longtime bandmate Zayn Malik. Artist of the Year says it all, right?
